Another staffer at the troubled Malmsbury youth justice facility has been assaulted on the job and taken to hospital.

Paramedics were called to the Mollison Street facility on Monday night responding to reports a worker had been assaulted in the secure side of the Monash unit.

It is understood the worker was checking if doors were locked and then assaulted by a client with a weapon made from a mop handle.

A prison source said “the temperature is rising” in the facility between inmates and frustrated staffers.

It is the second violent incident within less than a week at the plagued facility.

Last week a 39-year-old man was hospitalised after sustaining injuries to his upper body.

A Department of Justice spokesman confirmed Monday’s incident.

“A youth justice worker was transported to hospital by ambulance,” the department spokesman said.

“Violent behaviour or assaults at youth justice centres are absolutely unacceptable, and the safety of staff and young people is paramount.

“New laws are now in effect that strengthen consequences for young people who assault youth justice custodial workers, damage property, and escape or try to escape.

“This includes a presumption they will serve their sentences on top of an existing period of detention.”

The incident has been referred to Victoria Police.
