Police are investigating an alleged assault at the Malmsbury youth justice centre on Wednesday night.
Emergency services were called to the facility about 7.50pm and a 39-year-old man was treated for non-life-threatening injuries to his upper body.
He was taken to Bendigo hospital in a stable condition.
The man who was assaulted is understood to be a male worker in a secure unit.
A spokesman from the Community and Public Sector Union condemned the alleged assault.
“We are extremely concerned about the safety of staff at Malmsbury,” a spokesman said.
This incident shows there is more work to be done inside that facility.”
A Department of Justice and Community Safety spokeswoman said violent behaviour and assaults at youth justice centres were “absolutely unacceptable” and “the safety of staff and young people is paramount.”
“New laws are now in effect that strengthen consequences for young people who assault youth justice custodial workers, damage property, and escape or try to escape,” the spokeswoman said.

The incident is the latest in a string of violence at the centre, which has in the past been placed into lockdown due to concerns from guards.
Police said the investigation was ongoing. Union health and safety officers will attend the youth justice facility today.
