The Missing Persons Squad has taken over the investigation into the disappearance of an elderly mum and son involved in a bizarre boat trip.

Felicity Loveday, 84, and her son, Adrian Meneveau, 54, from Frankston, were last seen at Olivers Hill boat ramp in Frankston about 7am on Wednesday, December 11.

The pair set off in a small boat, telling family they would return in three days.

But the boat was later located submerged in water in Ricketts Points, about 20km from the launch site, and neither person has been seen since.

The boat the mother and son departed in was later found submerged in water.

An extensive search of Port Phillip Bay was conducted but no trace of them was found.

It can be revealed detectives from the Missing Persons Squad have taken on the case.

Investigators are yet to rule whether their disappearance is suspicious.

The squad oversees cases where a person’s whereabouts is unknown, or there are fears for the safety of a person.

Police held “deep” concerns over the boat voyage early in the investigation, previously overseen by the Marine Investigation Unit.

Ms Loveday is frail, suffers severe dementia and is dependent on her son.

Senior Constable Chris Obst earlier raised concerns about why an elderly woman would get aboard such an unsuitable boat for three days.

There were also questions about the length of time it took family to report the pair missing.

A photograph of the mum and son was taken by Ms Loveday’s daughter, who farewelled them at the boat ramp.

It does not appear to show sleeping gear or other supplies on the boat which would be required for a three-day trip.

The daughter told police her brother had been in contact via text on Friday to say the pair were having a good time.

The contact ceased by Saturday, she told police, when she reported them as missing.

The boat was purchased by Mr Meneaveu shortly before he and his mum set off.

Investigations into their disappearance are ongoing.

Anyone with information about the mother and son are urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
