A man has been remembered as an avid Hawks supporter who doted on his rescue dog after he was killed in an alleged stabbing rampage at a Melbourne apartment complex.

Tributes flowed for Nicholas Cameron in the hours after his bloodied body was found in the carpark of the Sturt St block in Southbank on Saturday morning.

Friend Tess O’Donoghue said it was “very sad news”.

“He was a real country boy who loved a laugh,” Ms O’Donoghue said.

“He loved his mates, family, the Hawks, and also his rescue pup, Dudley, who he adored.

“He was a lovely guy, but unfortunately got into drugs the past few years so he’s been off the radar.”

Ms O’Donoghue said he was too young to die.

“Poor guy and his poor family,” she said.

Emergency responders were called to the apartment complex shortly after midnight following reports of a man with multiple stab wounds.

Paramedics treated him at the scene, but he could not be revived.

Police swooped on Stuart Lindsay Heron, 29, in a nearby lift.

Mr Heron, who is from Toolangi in the Yarra Ranges, was charged with murder and fronted Melbourne Magistrates’ Court for a brief hearing on Saturday.

No details of the allegations against him were aired in court.

As the charge is so serious, he was unable to apply for bail in the lower court.

Any bid for freedom while he waits for his case to proceed would have to be made in the Supreme Court.

Homicide detective Sol Solomon described the alleged attack as “extremely brutal”.

He said police had seized the weapon believed to have been used in the alleged assault, but would not elaborate any further on the circumstances.

It was not known if Mr Heron and Mr Cameron knew each other or if it was a random incident.

Mr Heron was remanded in custody to return to court on October 1.

Police charged the 29-year-old man on Saturday morning.

He will remain in custody until he appears at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on October 1.

The charges come after a man was found injured in an apartment complex on Sturt Street about midnight.

Paramedics treated him at the scene but were unable to save his life.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the man was yet to be formally identified.

While the exact events leading up to the stabbing remain unknown, the spokeswoman said investigators are not hunting anyone else over the fatal stabbing.

Investigators remain at the scene.
