A violent brawl between two warring rival youth gangs led to the fatal stabbing of a teenager in St Kilda, a court has heard.

Hashim Mohamed, 18, was killed earlier this month when he was stabbed during a fight involving more than 20 young males near the foreshore.

Two of the youths, both 17, alleged to be involved faced a children’s court on Friday after they were arrested in Fitzroy the previous day.

A homicide squad detective told the hearing the boys, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were members of the Original Gangster Killers which was embroiled in conflict with a rival gang.

The detective said 13 gang members, some of whom were armed with knives, fought with other youths for about 30 seconds before the Tarneit teenager was stabbed in the back with a large blade.

The court heard the knife was embedded so deep it protruded out of Mr Mohamed’s chest and was not removed until a post-mortem examination.

After the fight, which was captured on CCTV, the detective said members of the public surrounded Mr Mohamed to protect him from further attack.

“The stabbing took place in front of thousands of people out enjoying themselves,” he said.

Some of the boys fled into backstreets with a number of them detained and searched by police but released due to a lack of evidence.

In opposing bail, the detective said police were concerned further violence would take place.

“They are prepared to arm themselves routinely and attack rival gangs in public places,” he said.

The detective said the investigation was ongoing with DNA forensics and phone analysis yet to be finalised and witnesses to make statements.

The boys, who are facing unlawful assault and affray charges, were denied bail and will return to court on December 23.

It comes after two other youths, aged 16 and 17, were denied bail on Thursday as investigators combed through CCTV in their search for further offenders.
