Teenager Hashim Mohamed had passed his driving test just days before he was fatally stabbed in a fight at St Kilda foreshore.

The teenage victim of a suspected gang attack lay fatally wounded on St Kilda foreshore with a knife still inside him as his attackers ran from the scene and left him for dead.

Hashim Mohamed, 18, died in what police are investigating as an act of daylight gang violence in front of hundreds of shocked beachgoers enjoying the first weekend of summer on Sunday.

A handful of horrified bystanders filmed the dying teenager as police and paramedics desperately tried to save him.

Mr Mohamed was dead by the time his family arrived at hospital. His brother, Hamid, told Nine News the family was shocked.

“It was very, very stressful,” he said. “We are coping through it, there is a lot of support by family and friends and close people.

“He was a good kid, just liked to go out with his friends, and a social guy, pretty happy, just (a) normal 18-year-old.”

He said his brother dreamt of owning his own business.

Mr Mohamed passed his driving test only on Friday. His driving teacher, Rabiaa Chandab, told the Herald Sun: “He was a very, very nice guy.

“I am in a state of shock.”

Ms Chandab said she hoped Mr Mohamed’s attackers would face justice.

A grieving relative took to social media to pay tribute to the devout Muslim. “May Allah have Mercy on Hashim,” the relative wrote. “I’m still in shock, I wish this was a horrible dream I can wake up from.”

Detective Inspector Nigel L’Estrange, of the homicide squad, said investigators believed Mr Mohamed’s death was a result of “a fight between approximately five to six African males”.

It is understood police are closing in on suspects.

A mobile Victoria Police CCTV device on the foreshore captured a gang of men arriving and fleeing on public transport.

Investigators believed “a number of knives were involved in this incident”, but as of Monday detectives had found only the one left in Mr Mohamed’s body, Inspector L’Estrange said.

“It’s a horrible incident to be done in public,” he said.

St Kilda resident Jonathan was at the beach to enjoy the warmth and returned on Monday morning with his dog.

“I reckon I saw the before and the after of it all,” he said.

“There were so many people around, so many families.

“A group ran across the road to escape – about six to eight people.”

Inspector L’Estrange on Monday confirmed investigators were exploring whether the Mr Mohamed’s death was gang-related but added: “We have nothing in relation to the motive at this point.”

He would not detail what kind of knife was used to kill Mr Mohamed.

Extra police were patrolling St Kilda on the night of the attack as part of Operation Summersafe, a four month campaign aimed at violence, drug taking and other criminal behaviour near Melbourne’s beaches.

“I’m not going to hide away from this, it is a pretty traumatic event, not only for those involved but for people who have witnessed it,” Inspector L’Estrange said.

“I know this, in isolation, looks pretty bad but if you look at it over the year we are a pretty safe space.”

Family’s heartbreak over teen stabbing videos

Mr Mohamed’s heartbroken family have vented their frustration over graphic videos that have been posted to social media about the deadly stabbing.

A video, with more than 200,000 views, was uploaded to TikTok on Sunday with the caption “Something bad just happened in St Kilda” and “I hope they catch the ones responsible”.

The footage shows a crowd of beachgoers standing behind police tape while detectives search the area.

The victim’s cousin commented on the video and demanded it be taken down.

“My aunty and family for real (sic) don’t need to see him like this,” she said.

“Not everything is for TikTok like have some shame and delete this now.”

Another video was posted on the popular app showing police and paramedics by the victim’s side.

A family member requested for it to also be deleted.

“We are still in denial and mourning,” she said.

“The last thing we want to see is this.”
