Heartbreaking CCTV footage has captured the moment the teenage daughter of a woman allegedly murdered by her ex-husband rushed to her neighbour for help.
The chilling video shows the 16-year-old frantically banging on a neighbours door for help.
“Please help,” the girl cried through tears.
“I’m pretty sure she is dead.”
Her father had allegedly attacked her mother — Nelomie Perera — with a tomahawk in her Sandhurst home, but the girl was able to flee and raise the alarm.
It’s understood Ms Perera’s 14-year-old son also suffered head injuries in the incident, and was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition.
Ms Perera was found dead in her Wodalla Circuit home shortly before midnight on Saturday following reports of an assault.
Police arrived at the property in Melbourne’s south east about 11.50pm where they found Ms Perera’s body.
The Melbourne mum’s ex-husband, Dinush Kurera, was on Sunday afternoon charged with her murder.
Mr Kurera, 45, fronted the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Sunday and made no application for bail.
The mother-of-three was “failed by system” friends say.
Nelomie Perera, 43, was on Sunday night remembered as a beautiful person and devoted mother as friends grappled with the “senseless” act.
Close friend Bec said she would miss Nelomie “so much”, and claimed she was “failed by the system”.
“Nell was a beautiful person and a loving and devoted friend and mother,” she told the Herald Sun.
“We are all shocked, appalled, and deeply saddened by this senseless and wanton act.
“She ... was failed by the system, like so many other beautiful souls.
“We love you and miss you so much, you will never be forgotten.”
Bec said Nelomie and Mr Kurera had separated “about a year ago” after a marriage spanning around 20 years.
A woman living close by, who didn’t want to be identified, said she watched the dramatic arrest unfold.
“Her 16-year-old daughter came running out of the house and to the neighbour, he’s the one that actually called the police,” she said.
“I sat out here watching until 3am, he came out of the house crying.”
“He sat in the police car for an hour, I guess they were taking statements. The whole time I was wondering if she survived.”
Neighbours living on the quiet and secluded streets around the home have reacted with shock and disbelief, many saying this is the first time they’ve seen a police car in the suburb.
“People around here seem to keep to themselves,” Sam Mirani said.
“I know a family lives (in that house) but I’ve never spoken to them.”
“I’m just in shock, nothing like this has happened before and I think it’s going to change our view of the area,” another said.
Mr Kurera will face court again in April.
