A boy who filmed an alleged hit-run that left two cyclists with horror injuries has been refused bail as he faces fresh charges over an alleged violent daylight carjacking.
The 15-year-old is among a trio of youths accused of wielding machetes as they dragged a woman from her Mercedes-Benz near Kavanagh Reserve in Mordialloc about 9.40am on August 13.
A Children’s Court on Wednesday heard they then led police on a wild chase which saw the stolen car reach speeds of up to 150km/h and a motorcyclist forced from the bitumen as they drove on the wrong side of the road.
A police helicopter tracked the vehicle before stop-sticks were laid to end the chase on Frankston-Dandenong Rd in Carrum Downs.
The boy, who was on four counts of bail, then allegedly abandoned the Merc and jumped into a Subaru to flee before more stop-sticks were deployed and the trio was arrested in Clayton.
Police opposed the boy’s bail application on Wednesday, with First Constable Jason Brown telling the court he was a “prolific” repeat offender who had previously breached bail and a youth supervision order.
“(He) has an extensive criminal history for similar offending for what he is in court for today,” he said.
“Police believe (he) will continue to offend if he were granted bail.”
The boy is also facing attempted burglary charges after he allegedly tried to break into multiple homes in Waterways in Melbourne’s southeast just hours before the carjacking.
In refusing bail, the Children’s Court magistrate accepted the boy had a disadvantaged upbringing in which he was placed in state care from a young age.
But his poor compliance with prior bail orders meant he posed an unacceptable risk of reoffending and to the public, she said.
In May, the boy was handed a nine-month probation order after pleading guilty to reckless conduct endangering life and dishonesty offences over the Beach Rd hit-run which left cyclist Kevin Gallon with a brain bleed and spinal fractures.
In that incident, the boy filmed on Snapchat from the passenger seat as he told the driver “hit him, hit him, hit him”, later smirking in his police interview when questioned about the January crash.
He also admitted driving or being a passenger in five stolen cars, and to thefts of tech and bank cards from vehicles during a four-month crime spree which began in November last year.
On Wednesday, the boy had his four counts of bail revoked.
He will return to court later this month facing different charges.
