A woman is fighting for life after driving nearly 5km through the Domain Tunnel on the wrong side of the road before slamming into a truck head-on in the early hours of Friday morning.
Police say the 36-year-old woman entered CityLink at Montague St in South Melbourne via the exit ramp and drove on the wrong side of the freeway toward the eastern suburbs about 2.10am.
The Wyndham Vale woman, driving a small silver hatchback, then drove more than four kilometres against citybound traffic through the Domain Tunnel.
She then collided with a huge Scania truck near the Church St bridge at Burnley.
She was taken to The Alfred Hospital in a serious condition with upper and lower body injuries.
She was on Friday evening fighting for her life in a critical condition.
The driver of the truck was also in a stable condition at The Alfred.
The truck driver, a 51-year-old man from Aintree, was also taken to The Alfred Hospital in stable condition with a lower body injury.
“The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision remains ongoing,” Victoria Police said in a statement.
All lanes on the CityLink and Monash Freeway were opened about 7.30am.
Police say there is no indication that the driver’s actions were an act of self harm.
They are also investigating whether the driver was involved in a separate collision on Wurundjeri Way in South Wharf moments before the crash.
It is unclear what speeds she was travelling at as she struck the Scania truck.
Blood tests were conducted on the driver as she arrived at The Alfred early on Friday morning.
Those results will determine whether drugs or alcohol were a contributing factor to the smash.
Members from Transurban attended the crash site to assist in diverting traffic before handing the scene and investigation to police.
It closed three of the four lanes along CityLink before both the truck and car were towed away.
Almost the entire journey is understood to have been captured on the dozens of traffic cameras between South Melbourne and Burnley.
The front of the silver car was totally mangled with debris left over several lanes.
