A young tradie accused of killing his mate after an alleged wrestle in a Melbourne apartment turned deadly has pleaded not guilty to manslaughter as his case was fast-tracked to the Supreme Court.

Quinn McPherson, 20, from South Australia, fronted the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Friday after he was charged with the manslaughter of Alex Robinson, 20, last year.

Police allege Mr McPherson, from Seaview Downs, was wrestling with Mr Robinson in a Melbourne apartment on La Trobe St about 9am on May 13.

Mr Robinson, who police say lost consciousness during the alleged tussle, was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.

According to a charge sheet released by the court, police allege Mr McPherson did “unlawfully kill” Mr Robinson.

The court heard Mr McPherson was electing to fast-track his case to the Supreme Court, which means he will not face a committal hearing to test the evidence against him.

When asked by Magistrate Stephen Ballek if he pleaded guilty or not guilty, Mr McPherson replied: “Not guilty.”

No details of the alleged killing were aired in court.

The court heard a Supreme Court trial is expected to run for 10 to 15 days.

Mr Robinson and Mr McPherson are believed to be old school friends who both attended Seaview High School in Adelaide.

“My family, my friends, my rugby, my life,” Mr McPherson previously wrote on his social media when asked to describe himself.

Mr Robinson’s devastated family last year paid tribute to their “cherished” boy, remembering him as a “much loved” son and brother.

Mr McPherson, wearing a blue blazer, sat behind his defence lawyer during the committal mention.

His bail was also extended, which permits him to live in South Australia.

He will front the Supreme Court in March for a directions hearing.
