A young tradie from South Australia charged with manslaughter has been sent threats after an alleged wrestle with an old school friend turned deadly, a court has heard.
Quinn McPherson, 20, fronted the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Monday morning after he was arrested in Magill, east of Adelaide, on Wednesday.
Police allege Mr McPherson, from Seaview Downs, was wrestling with mate Alex Robinson, 20, from Darlington South, in a Melbourne apartment on La Trobe St about 9am on May 13.
Mr Robinson, who police say lost consciousness during the alleged tussle, was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.
Two other men from South Australia, both aged 20, were inside the property at the time but were not involved in the incident.
Mr McPherson, who previously worked at the SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre, was on Wednesday charged with manslaughter over his friend’s death.
According to a charge sheet released by the court, police allege Mr McPherson did “unlawfully kill” Mr Robinson.
He was bailed by the Adelaide Magistrates Court on the condition he travel to Melbourne to face the manslaughter charge.
A prosecutor told the court they did not oppose Mr McPherson being granted bail as he had been “co-operating” with Victoria Police, who were not looking to extradite him.
Supported by his parents, Mr McPherson sat solemnly in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Monday morning.
His bail was varied by Magistrate Bernard Fitzgerald to allow him to travel to Melbourne from Adelaide for all future court hearings and appointments with his lawyers.
The court also heard the 20-year-old and his family have received “threats to safety”.
“Police are aware of them and have seen some of the threats that have been written,” his defence lawyer said.
Mr Robinson and Mr McPherson are believed to be old school friends who both attended Seaview High School in Adelaide.
“My family, my friends, my rugby, my life,” Mr McPherson previously wrote on his social media when asked to describe himself.
Mr Robinson’s devastated family on Thursday paid tribute to their “cherished” boy, remembering him as a “much loved” son and brother.
“Dearly loved and cherished son of Natalie and Darren and stepson of Anthony and Tania,” a family spokesman said.
“Much loved brother and stepbrother of Mia, Grace, Matthew, Lachlan and Alesha. Loved by all of his extended family and friends.
“Forever loved. Forever remembered.”
Mr McPherson will return to court for a committal mention on February 16.
