Food delivery drivers have become easy pickings for young criminals looking to steal vehicles to fuel their high-speed joy rides across town.

Innocent drivers are being stalked from the moment they leave a restaurant or takeaway joint and followed to a delivery point before groups of teens spring their plan into action.

As the driver delivers the goods to the front door, crews of teens storm the vehicle, with the ignition almost always left running, and take off with their new wheels.

The Herald Sun has been told the unsuspecting drivers are being caught up in the wave of car thefts at an alarming rate.

Teenagers have also filmed themselves bashing a delivery driver for his food.

They filmed themselves punching the man, kicking him and stomping on his head as he lay defenceless on the ground.

Another video shows a group of children following a delivery man to his car late at night, jostling to jump into the front seat of his small hatchback.

These videos emerged days after an innocent food delivery driver, 33, was allegedly king hit and run over while a trio of boys stole his Toyota Camry from Langwarrin on Thursday.

Shocking CCTV of that alleged attack showed the victim, who suffered serious injuries, being dragged down the street as he clung to his steering wheel from the outside of his car.

“They constantly pick Uber Eats drivers,” one source well informed of Melbourne’s youth crime activity said.

“Often the Uber Eats drivers will deliver a meal to someone, run in to drop it off and leave their car running, and these kids just jump in the car and take off.

“They watch them, they hang around out the front of restaurants and wait for them to come out with deliveries for people and they’ll take the food off them.

“They get the food off them, they bash them, they steal their cars.”

Saad Mehar, who fell victim to a carjacking while delivering food in Moonee Ponds, said his alleged attacker jumped in his car and took off while he was just metres away.

“I was delivering some items with my car in the driveway, I was literally going to give the food to the customer and somebody came up and drove off in my car,” he said. “Unfortunately I left the ignition on and obviously the key was inside, I was literally four or five metres from the car and he just drove away with it.”

An unsuspecting milk delivery driver had his truck nicked in Geelong just days ago in similar circumstances.

The refrigerated milk truck was making a routine delivery at a Pakington St establishment in the early hours before an opportunistic thief sprung into action.

A man quickly jumped behind the wheel and took off with the Sungold truck as the driver made a delivery inside for a mere 60 seconds.

Victoria Police confirmed food delivery drivers made up a significant portion of all carjacking victims.

“The latest Crime Statistics Agency data shows there were 359 carjackings recorded in Victoria in the 12 months to March 2024,” a police statement read.

“Of these, 126 or 35.1 per cent were unsuccessful attempts.

“Given there are over five million registered vehicles in Victoria and hundreds of millions of trips on Victorian roads every year, your odds of falling victim to a carjacking are long.”

Uber have offered their food delivery service drivers counselling support and have previously established dedicated teams tasked with responding to criminal incidents at all hours.
