A man fleeing from police over alleged family violence matters has died at a busy shopping centre in Melbourne’s southeast.
Police descended on the Lynbrook Village Shopping Centre after attending a nearby home - believed to be a friend’s - about 1.10pm on Friday afternoon to arrest the man.
Homicide Squad Detective Inspector Dean Thomas said the 36-year-old man barricaded himself in a toilet cubicle inside the shopping centre while trying to flee from police.
“Upon their arrival at the address, the male has noticed the police arrive and he has jumped off a balcony of the apartmen the was staying at into the shopping centre grounds and he has run into the shopping centre,” he told media.
He said officers followed the man, who was known to police, into the centre but lost sight of him before he was eventually located inside a female cubicle with self-inflicted wounds.
Det Insp. Thomas told media the offender was found with an edged weapon at the time and was threatening officers.
“He was still holding that weapon and a taser was deployed at that point in time and he was taken into custody,” he said.
The man died at the scene a short time later from his injuries despite the assistance of paramedics and was not injured during a struggle with police.
Homicide squad detectives and internal investigators from professional standards command will be involved because of the man’s interaction with officers before he died.
CCTV will be a key part of the inquiry.
Dozens of witnesses likely saw what happened inside the complex.
More than a dozen police cars could be seen parked outside the centre.
In footage obtained by the Herald Sun, a man could be seen lying down on a stretcher while being treated by paramedics.
A police helicopter could be seen circling the area surrounding the shopping centre.
A brief will be prepared for the Coroner.
