A major police search has been launched for the body of Hells Angels associate Kerry Giakoumis.
Detectives from a special murder taskforce have zeroed in on the Jackson Creek area of Diggers Rest amid an intensifying investigation into the 14-month mystery.
They have been carrying out a ground search and deployed divers to scour the creek for any trace in the area where they suspect Mr Giakoumis’s body was dumped.
The 29-year-old concreter from Adelaide was last seen alive at the Hells Angels Nomads chapter clubhouse in Lipton Drive, Thomastown, in the early hours of June 10 last year.
He had travelled to Melbourne five days earlier with two patched Angels associates and did not make a scheduled flight home on the night he vanished.
The Herald Sun can reveal members of the homicide squad, the Echo task force and the missing persons squad have joined forces to hunt his killers and have been working with South Australian counterparts.
They have released an image of a man they are hoping to identify, who was among a group with Mr Giakoumis on the night he disappeared.
Investigators also want to hear from anyone who noticed any suspicious activity around Jackson Creek after the suspected murder.
Detective Superintendent Paul O’Halloran said police were committed to catching those responsible.
“We’ve created a task force involving specialist detectives with experience in the investigation of missing persons, murder and outlaw motorcycle gangs because we believe this gives us the best opportunity to solve this case,” he said.
Investigators believe a dispute erupted in the clubhouse before Mr Giakoumis’s death.
Supt O’Halloran stressed that anyone with information could give it anonymously, via Crime Stoppers.
“I also believe there are likely to be people out there who don’t agree with what has happened to Kerry, and that it went too far,” Supt O’Halloran said. “This is your chance to tell us your version of events.”
A friend of Mr Giakoumis hoped police would be able to find out what happened.
“It’s heartbreaking thinking he is still out there and hasn’t been laid to rest,” the friend said.
“I want to see these people suffer and … be put behind bars but that still won’t be enough.
“Jail time isn’t going to do enough justice,” the friend said.
