A bright and bubbly seven-year-old girl who died in a tragic road accident has been remembered as a caring and compassionate child who loved the environment.

Drouin resident Rose McMahon was fatally struck by a caravan at Tidal River camping ground in Wilsons Promontory on October 10 while holidaying with her parents.

Rose, a year 2 student at St Ita’s primary school, had run to retrieve a soccer ball at the same time that the caravan began to reverse.

Her loving parents, Chris and Katrin McMahon, said they were grateful to the holidaymakers who rushed to their aid and attempted to revive Rose at the scene, as well as the brave paramedics involved.

They said just a day before the accident Rose had been planting trees near Tidal River as part of a regeneration project.

“Rose lived a life caring for the people, nature and animals around her in Drouin,” a family statement said.

“She took great pleasure in meeting and getting to know people, planting trees, spending time in the bush and doting on animals.

“Rose especially loved Drouin’s many local birds and was keen to do what she could to protect their habitat.

“It is our hope that our family continues her mission to make the world a better and kinder place.”

St Isa’s principal Andrew Osler said plans were under way to honour Rose in a number of ways, including a memorial service on Friday, planting a rose bush at the school and creating a friendship bench in her name.

“Rose was a child who embraced everything about school — she had a passion for learning, she was always inclusive and looking out for others,” Mr Osler said.

“She was a really good role model to other kids.

“We were devastated when we got the news, because of the social connection she had to the community.

“She was mature beyond her years and brought a ray of light to everyone’s lives.”

In lieu of flowers, extended family have launched a fundraiser to support community initiatives across the Baw Baw Shire and Wilsons Promontory National Park over the coming year in honour of Rose.

Police continue to investigate the accident.
