A father accidentally ran over his daughter with their family caravan as the little girl ran to collect a soccer ball in a holiday tragedy, according to shocked witnesses.

A family holiday at Tidal River at Wilsons Promontory turned into a nightmare when the horror incident unfolded, killing the seven-year-old girl, about 10am on Sunday.

A witness told the Herald Sun that the father was reversing his caravan at the intersection of River Rd and Fifth Ave when his seven-year-old daughter ran to grab a soccer ball at the same time.

The girl’s mother was metres away as her daughter was knocked unconscious.

“We just heard a wail, a scream, from the mum,” the witness said.

“The girl’s dad was in the car and didn’t know what was going on initially.

“After the accident the girl’s mum was holding her. The girl was fully unconscious.”

Holiday makers rushed to the commotion and those with first-aid qualifications leapt to help, including two nurses and an off-duty paramedic.

The team of good Samaritans performed CPR until paramedics arrived.

“A few people came over and have a look after they heard the screams,” the witness said. “That’s when everyone started stepping in and started CPR.”

Police briefly interviewed her parents and local officers examined the scene.

“The dad was blaming himself because he was behind the wheel,” a witness said.

“The mum was saying it wasn’t his fault, the girl just wanted to chase the ball.”

At the time of the accident the girl was wearing a tracksuit and ugg boots.

Remnants of police tape were left at the scene on Sunday and two yellow “road closed” signs were still visible at the scene of the tragedy.

Holiday maker Jacinta Van Stek had gone to Wilsons Promontory with her family from Woodleigh and said it was very upsetting to hear the news.

“You can’t even imagine what they are going through,” Ms Van Stek said.

“To come here on a holiday and go home without a child would be devastating.”

Police said in a statement that the driver of the vehicle was assisting with the investigation. No charges have been laid and the investigation was continuing on Sunday night.

Anyone who witnessed the incident call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
