A prisoner has sparked a major security drama by climbing on to the roof of one of the state’s biggest jails.

The Herald Sun understands an inmate has been on top of the Ravenhall prison since the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Emergency services and police are at the scene.

It is unknown how the prisoner scaled the roof.

The correctional facility is a medium-security male prison, about 25km west of Melbourne’s CBD and it houses more than 1300 prisoners.

Victoria Police said they were “responding to reports of a man on a roof” at the Boundary Rd prison.

Uniformed officers were called to the scene about 10am.

Specialist police negotiators have also been deployed.

“The situation remains very dynamic,” a Victoria Police spokesman said.

Media have been asked not to attend the scene.

“We don’t want the situation to unintentionally escalate,” the spokesman said.
