Police suspect missing Warrnambool man Christopher Jarvis was murdered

Police have shed new light on the case of missing Warrnambool man Christopher Jarvis, who vanished 16 years ago.

A MAN whose car was found torched at a Warrnambool beauty spot 16 years ago was murdered, police suspect.

The disappearance of Christopher Jarvis on June 13, 2006, was for more than a decade regarded as not suspicious.

But the Herald Sun can reveal detectives from the missing persons squad have spent recent years examining exactly what happened to Mr Jarvis.

He was last seen alive at 6am when he left the Warrne Rd, Wangoom, home he shared with his partner and stepchildren.

When Mr Jarvis did not arrive for work at a Warrnambool freight company by 7.30am, staff contacted his partner.

At 8am, his silver 1991 Ford station wagon was found burning at the Thunder Point lookout, a spot popular for its spectacular ocean views.

The Ford, registered RVA 468, had been driven a short distance from a tourist car park into scrub before being incinerated.

Its owner’s body was never found.

The disappearance was initially regarded as not suspicious but investigators who have more recently scrutinised the Jarvis case suspect this is not so.

They believe he is the victim of foul play and that one or more other people are involved in what happened.

Detectives are still hoping to hear from anyone who has more detail on the movements of Mr Jarvis on the morning he vanished but is yet to come forward.

They are particularly keen to talk to people who saw him in the lead-up to the disappearance.

Detective Insp. Andrew Stamper of the missing persons squad said those behind the death would be carrying a big burden.

“Those responsible for Chris’ disappearance have had to live with this secret for 16 years, maybe thinking they’d got away with it, maybe knowing the day would come when they would be called to account for their actions,” Insp. Stamper said.

“16 years is a very long time to be looking over your shoulder.”

He said allegiances changed over such a long period and it was possible people may now feel able to give answers to police and the Jarvis family.

“We believe that there are people in the Warrnambool community – likely still residing here – who have information that will assist investigators in holding those responsible to account,” Insp. Stamper said.

“Now is the time to do the right thing and to come forward. Any information received by police will be investigated thoroughly, and we will continue to search for the truth of what happened to Chris to provide those answers to his loved ones, and to the Warrnambool community.”
