An officer at a teen jail has wound up in hospital after being viciously bashed by an inmate in Melbourne on Wednesday night.

The Herald Sun has been told the violence began when the Parkville Youth Justice Centre officer was struck from behind by one detainee at 6.30pm.

Two others then joined in the onslaught.

The worker was taken to hospital with facial injuries.

Police confirmed they had been called to an assault at Parkville.

“It is believed a male staff member was assaulted by three inmates,” a Victoria Police statement said.

“Police are investigating the exact circumstances of the incident.”

A Department of Justice and Community Safety spokeswoman said the incident was quickly contained by staff and police notified.

“A staff member was taken to hospital to be assessed and was released a short time later,” the spokeswoman said.

“The department takes the safety and security of all staff and young people seriously.

“Violent behaviour at youth justice centres is never tolerated. ”
