Community leader's plea for violence to stop

A teenager has been charged over the fatal stabbing of Tarneit teen Hashim Mohamed in St Kilda last month.

Homicide Squad detectives have charged an 18-year-old man after he was arrested at a Deer Park bus stop about 5pm on January 5.

He has been charged with violent disorder and affray and will appear at a Children’s Court at a later date.

The arrest comes just days after police said they were hunting for people who could assist with their inquiries.

Mr Mohamed, 18, was killed during a brawl involving two rival youth gangs on St Kilda foreshore on December 4.

A children’s court previously heard Mr Mohamed was confronted by up to 13 members of a gang named the Original Gangster Killers.

The teenager was fatally stabbed with such force that the knife protruded through his chest.

The clash lasted about 30 seconds and took place in front of hundreds of shocked beachgoers enjoying the first weekend of summer.

Police have trawled CCTV which captured the fracas involving about 20 young men, with eight males having now been identified and charged with affray and unlawful violence.

The investigation remains ongoing.
