A Melbourne man who allegedly followed a drug shipment across the Nullarbor from behind the wheel of a Hummer has been granted bail.

Mohammed Oueida is accused of being a key player in a crime syndicate that sparked a series of raids in Melbourne in 2021.

Oueida was arrested months prior to the raids as he allegedly followed a motorhome carrying a commercial quantity of drugs into Western Australia.

He was arrested by a joint law enforcement operation as were two Victorians driving the motorhome.

Oueida once owned this $2.8 million house in Greenvale.

Investigators suspect Oueida of being the “principal person” who co-ordinated the alleged smuggling of 33kg of methamphetamine and 50,000 pills in the rented Winnebago.

It’s alleged Oueida was in convoy with the rented motorhome and has been on remand since mid-2021.

But weeks ago Oueida was released on bail by a Perth court with a surety set at $250,000.

It is understood he is not allowed to leave the state.

Oueida has been a notable figure in Melbourne for decades.

He has a pilot’s licence, was known to drive a Ferrari and once owned a sprawling multimillion-dollar Greenvale property complete with a mini golf course.

In 2017, he survived being shot after leaving a Coburg mosque.

Following his arrest police carried out 20 warrants in Melbourne’s northern suburbs as it probed a Middle Eastern organised crime gang smuggling drugs into Australia.

Oueida’s trial is expected to begin in July next year.
