Melbourne underworld figure Mohammed Oueida will fight high-level drug trafficking charges over a big Winnebago meth bust.

The influential Oueida – who has been shot twice in Melbourne – will face court in Western Australia next month over the seizure of 33kg of methamphetamine found in the motorhome in April last year.

It is alleged two other Melbourne people, Khaled El-Moustafa, 36, and Nada Dennaoui, 43, had travelled to Perth with the drugs concealed under a bed in the rented Winnebago.

They were stopped on the Great Eastern Highway near the wheatbelt town of Kellerberrin, 200km from Perth.

Oueida, who is suspected of being the principal figure in the plan, had travelled in convoy with them in a Hummer SUV, an earlier court hearing was told.

He was arrested a day later in the southern Perth suburb of Coolbellup.

It has been alleged that Oueida and the others communicated via encrypted communications devices as they crossed the continent.

The arrests were made by members of Western Australia’s drug and firearms squad with help from the Australian Federal Police and Victoria Police.

Oueida, El-Moustafa and Dennaoui will attend a trial listing hearing in the District Court next month.

They are expected to go to trial next year.

Oueida, a former member of the Comanchero bikie gang, is a well-known figure in Melbourne’s northern suburbs where he is said to have considerable clout.

The 46-year-old is a wealthy man but his success is said to have come at considerable cost to his safety.

Oueida survived a shooting outside the Coburg Mosque in 2017, a period in which there was tension between himself and members of the Tiba family.

He suffered a wound to the abdomen when the shooter leaned out of a BMW and opened fire on Moore St.

The victim declined to make a statement to police about what he knew of what had happened.

Oueida was also shot in a wild fracas at a house at Coolaroo in 2009.
