CCTV footage of fatal hit-run in Sunshine West

Well-known Sunshine West grandfather Sedat Hassan was left for dead in a hit-and-run crash in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Security camera footage captured the horror moment Mr Hassan’s Honda was hit by a white Audi on the corner of Glengala Rd and Links St.

According to police, the owner of the Audi, Alisha Fagan, 22, of Wyndham, was the only one of four people in the car to stay behind at the scene of the crash and help Mr Hassan.

Detective Sergeant Stephen Hill said to run was a “bastard act” and urged the trio to hand themselves in.

“The occupants of the white Audi unfortunately, and for reasons that are beyond my comprehension, have decided to cowardly run away from the scene, leaving that gentleman in a critical condition,” he said.

“If they had have remained … instead of running away, they may have been able to save him.

“The law says you need to stop and you need to help … because you have a real chance of saving someone’s life.

“It’s a real bastard act to leave a person dying on the side of the road as a result of a collision you’ve been involved in.”

Ms Fagan was charged with dangerous driving causing death, possessing a drug of dependence, possessing a controlled weapon and breaching bail, among other charges.

Ms Fagan, who was on bail for unrelated matters when she was arrested at the scene, did not appear in court and remained in her police cell with her lawyer telling the court the young woman was suffering from significant mental health issues.

“She will need to be seen by someone from forensicare immediately,” Ms Fagan’s lawyer told the brief hearing.

“She has said she doesn’t want to be here anymore,” she continued.

The court heard Ms Fagan had been diagnosed with chronic depression and borderline personality disorder.

Mr Hassan had lived in Sunshine West since the late 1970s and was known as a keen gardener.

His friend, D&H Hardware owner Jim Palioudas said he was distraught on hearing Mr Hassan had died.

“Hearing the news upset me, not because I lost a customer but because he lost his life,” he said.

“He was a very quiet, very nice man.

“He used to cross the road and have a coffee almost every morning at the milkbar.”

Mr Hassan lived only a kilometre from the intersection where he lost his life.

His grieving family described the retiree, who hails from Cyprus, as a very “generous” and “helpful” man, who had three sons and a four-month-old grandchild.

Local resident Lelani Francia believed she saw one occupant run up Glengala Rd after she was roused by the sound of the smash.

“When I looked out the window … I was able to see one guy running,” Ms Francia said.

“I didn’t realise that it was a (car crash) … I just heard a big bang.

“It was a loud bang because technically, I shouldn’t be hearing anything … these are double-glazed (windows).”

Any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
