A 65-year-old man was taken to hospital after being attacked by a group of teens he chased and confronted when he spotted them attempting to steal from his car in a Bayside suburb.
Three teenagers were arrested before being released without charge following the attempted theft and assault in Beaumaris about 10pm on Friday.
Police say the man confronted the teens as they tried to steal belongings from his car about 9.30pm.
He then drove after the group in his car before stopping at the intersection of Reserve Rd and Agnes St.
Police say the man exited his car before a verbal altercation with the teens turned violent and the man was assaulted.
Two 15-year-old boys and a 16-year-old boy were arrested at 10pm on Friday.
All three youths have now been released without charge and the investigation remains ongoing.
Influencer and businesswoman Bec Judd took to social media on Sunday to slam Victoria’s crime system.
Commenting on the Beaumaris incident, Judd said “the system is well and truly obliterated”.
She wrote: “And another.... So sorry for the victim. I know it’s typical to say this but the system is well and truly obliterated.”
Late last month Judd was critical of Premier Jacinta Allan after another home invasion.
Judd, a mum of four, labelled it “Just another night in Victoria”.
“Just another night in Victoria (yes, this is Bayside again but we know this happens everywhere).
“Jacinta Allan how are you still avoiding this? Let’s see how many of the alleged offenders are out on bail … Thoughts are with the victim in ICU and his poor wife.”
Judd has previously hit out at the state’s justice system over Victoria’s spiralling youth crime wave.
Judd, who lives in Brighton and boasts more than 750,000 followers on social media, has accused the government of “staying quiet” on youth crime gangs.
Local Phil Costello heard yelling from his home and said he was not surprised young people were involved as teen crime has escalated in the area.
“They were giving the police so much mouth and had no remorse – they were proud of what they had done,” Mr Costello said.
“I think we have a big problem with youths around these kids are just having a run of the place.”
James Newbury Member for Brighton has said that parents in Bayside had struggled to sleep due to the increasing crimes in the area and has called on the Premier to take action.
“The Bayside community is fearful every single night, because of these increasingly violent crimes,” Mr Newbury said.
“Parents can’t sleep properly. And yet Jacinta Allan and Labor ignore the crimes and won’t do anything to stop them.”
The man was transported to The Alfred hospital in a serious but stable condition with upper body injuries.
Another local Chloe Ting said she saw the altercation unfold as she watched on from her bedroom window.
“There was a bunch of commotion and from my window we saw a man lying on the ground bleeding,” Ms Ting said.
Anyone who witnessed the incident, has CCTV/dashcam footage or information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report at www.crimestoppers.com.au
