A man has drowned at a popular beach on the Mornington Peninsula.

Police were called to the pier at Rye on Friday afternoon following reports a man had drowned.

“Emergency services were called following reports a man was found unresponsive in waters near the Bay Trail boat ramp, about 3pm,” a Victoria Police statement said.

“The man, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.

“The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are yet to be determined but the death is not being treated as suspicious.”

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.

It comes as a man was pulled from the water in Rosebud on December 28.

Emergency services were called to Rosebud Pier just after 3.30pm after reports a man on an inflatable kayak was in difficulty 300 to 800 metres offshore.

The man was seen going into the water and a major search operation was launched.

He was found dead around 5.30pm.
