A father has been charged with the murder of his son following a fight at a Craigieburn home last week.

Mehmet Okuman, 53, fronted the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday afternoon following the death of his son Gokhan, 33, on Saturday night.

Police were called to an alleged incident at the home on Thoresby Circuit about 6.45pm after reports two men were fighting.

Gokhan was rushed to hospital with a life-threatening stab wound, but he could not be saved.

Mr Okuman, from Mickleham, was arrested at the scene and remained in hospital under police guard until Tuesday, before he was interviewed by detectives on Wednesday morning.

His defence barrister Dermot Dann told magistrate Pauline Spencer his client had fractured nine ribs and a bone in his back, and had surgery on his lacerated hand.

Mr Dann flagged that Mr Okuman, who has no prior convictions, may apply for bail in the Supreme Court in the coming weeks.

The court heard it was his first time in custody.

No details of the alleged murder were aired in court.

Loved ones waved to Mr Okuman from the body of the court as he was led out of the dock.

His dramatic arrest was captured on CCTV at a neighbouring property, showing a man wearing a red shirt and slippers in handcuffs as officers led him to a nearby vehicle.

One resident who lived on the street described the accused as “friendly”, saying he always waved and smiled when passing by.

A woman believed to be a family member arrived at the home visibly distressed, refusing to speak on the day of the alleged murder.

Neighbours told the Herald Sun a couple and their son lived at the property.

“Nice family, they have been living here around 14 years,” said one neighbour, who did not wish to be named.

“I was in shock. The whole street was cordoned when I got home.”

Police tape surrounded the single-storey home on Sunday morning as homicide detectives scoured the scene.

Another neighbour said the suburban street was very quiet.

“Nothing this dramatic has ever happened on this street before,” they said.

“You hate to see stuff like that ... but it’s happened now.”

Mr Okuman was remanded in custody and will return to court on May 7 for a committal mention.
