The driver whose four passengers died in a horror crash near Shepparton after he allegedly went through a stop sign will have his legal fees footed by the taxpayer.
Harinder Singh faced court on Thursday charged with dangerous driving causing the deaths of four men on January 4.
Those men were Baljinder Singh, Harpel Singh, Krishen Singh and Bhupinder Sandu.
It is alleged Mr Singh, 41, drove his Peugeot sedan through an intersection at Pine Lodge and Cosgrove-Lemnos roads, hitting a Toyota HiLux ute at high speeds.
His four passengers died instantly while the Mr Singh was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The Shepparton man faces four counts of dangerous driving causing death, and failing to stop and give way at a stop sign.
The Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Thursday heard that his application for Legal Aid funding had been approved within the last few days.
His lawyer, Jack Hurley, asked for a month-long adjournment of the case to engage in discussions with prosecutors and get instructions from his client.
Mr Singh was supported in court by his sister, and was assisted with translations by an interpreter.
His bail was extended, and he will return to court on July 10.
