A man allegedly stabbed to death by his housemate after an argument over household chores has been remembered as a “good man” who made friends easily.

Mihir Desai, 39, was fatally slashed inside a share house on Winton St in Burwood about 11pm on Tuesday.

His housemate, 42-year-old Rajesh Gade, has been charged with his murder.

Friends of Mr Desai told the Herald Sun he was a kind man whose death had shattered his family back in India.

“He was a very good person … he was going good in everything,” friend Shinpa Prajapati said.

“We couldn’t believe this at first. It was a big shock and sad for us because we know him.

“He is a very jolly man, he would always talk with everybody and was always making friends, talking to his family.”

Mr Desai, who was originally from Bilimora, a town in India’s Gujarat district, arrived in Australia in 2016 to study accounting with his then-wife.

It is understood the pair had since separated.

His loved ones have made arrangements to repatriate Mr Desai’s body back to India, where his mother and sister will plan a formal farewell.

Mr Desai’s sister, who had been living in Germany, returned to India after learning about her brother’s alleged murder.

“He was a kind and generous soul who touched many lives and will be deeply missed by all who knew him,” friend Jay Dhimmar wrote in an online fundraiser created to help pay for Mr Desai’s repatriation.

“A grieving mother needs our help. After the heartbreaking loss of her only son, she is left alone, struggling emotionally and financially.

“Her son was her only support, her strength, and her hope for the future.”

Another housemate who lived at the property told the Herald Sun on Wednesday that the two men were arguing over chores, which led to the fatal stabbing.

“He (Mr Gade) was pretty drunk and it was a pretty normal fight about housework and chores and stuff,” he said.

Mr Desai died at the scene.

Federation of Indian Associations of Victoria president Vasan Srinivasan said the Indian diaspora was heartbroken by the “tragedy”.

“The loss of such a young life under such tragic circumstances is truly heartbreaking,” he said.

“Our hearts go out to his mother during this challenging time. We understand the immense toll this must taken on her mental health.

“Our Indian community stands united and is always here to support anyone in need.”

As authorities attempted to make contact with Mr Desai’s relatives on Wednesday, Mr Gade faced the Melbourne Magistrates Court.

The court heard it was Mr Gade’s first time in custody.

He was remanded until his next court appearance on July 30.
