“It is understood four people were riding electric scooters along St Kilda Road when they had a verbal exchange with an unknown female pedestrian about 10.40pm,” a police statement said.

“The woman was picked up by a yellow Ford and the unknown driver began chasing after the four scooter riders.

“Police attended and attempted to speak with the four riders but they refused to provide statements.”

One rider, 30-year-old Melbourne man, later came forward to police and assisted with their investigation.

Police said they are hunting the driver of the yellow Ford, who on Monday afternoon remained outstanding.

Officers are also investigating traffic offences committed by the persons riding electric scooters in a 60km/h zone.

The investigation remains ongoing.

It comes as an electric scooter rider was killed after he was struck by a car at a busy intersection in Melbourne’s southeast on Thursday.

A white Volkswagen station wagon was travelling outbound on the Princes Highway in Narre Warren when it collided with the electric scooter at the Raven Crescent intersection about 5.15pm.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are probing the cause of the incident.

The state government and four councils – Melbourne, Yarra, Port Phillip and Ballarat – are trialling a public share scheme to gauge the benefits and risks of electronic scooters.

A 20km/h speed limit applies, e-scooters are not allowed on footpaths, but they can use bike lanes, shared paths and roads with a speed limit of 50km/h or less.

Private e-scooters are banned from public areas in Victoria despite their surge in popularity.
