Electric scooter rider dies in crash in Narre Warren

A man riding an electric scooter has died in a collision with a car in Narre Warren.

An electric scooter rider has been killed in a collision with a car in Melbourne.

Police are investigating the collision in Narre Warren on Thursday afternoon, which comes days after safety concerns were raised about the e-scooters.

Investigators have been told a white Volkswagen station wagon was travelling on the Princes Highway when it collided with the scooter at the intersection of Raven Cres.

The driver of the Volkswagen was not injured and stopped to offer assistance.

The Herald Sun this week revealed rising concerns over electronic scooters amid reports of a spike in crashes and anti-social behaviour.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives attended the scene to probe circumstances of the crash.

A police officer at the scene said a young man, who appeared to be in teens or 20s, had tried to cross the Princes Highway when he was struck by the station wagon that was travelling up to 80km/h.

The officer said dashcam footage from a vehicle behind the Volkswagen revealed the man had ridden directly into the path of the oncoming car.

“There wasn’t another car turning right or anything obstructing his view,” the officer said.

Police closed all outbound lanes of the highway for more than three hours as MCIU detectives

scoured the scene for clues.

The man’s body was taken away by 8.30pm but his shoes and scooter lay strewn on the ground next to the car.

The car’s windshield was caved in on the driver’s side.
