Drug boss George Marrogi has allegedly assaulted a maximum-security prison officer.
The Herald Sun has been told Marrogi became enraged on Sunday and attacked the staff member inside the Metropolitan Remand Centre in Melbourne’s western suburbs.
The feared gangland figure was being held at the jail’s Exford unit.
Marrogi – who founded the Notorious Crime Family gang from inside Barwon Prison – is doing a 32-year prison term for the 2016 execution-style murder of Kadir Ors at Campbellfield and has since been sentenced for high-level drug trafficking offences.
The officer assaulted was treated by the prison medical team and is expected to have X-rays done on Monday to assess the extent of the injuries.
Police did not attend the prison following the assault. However investigators have since spoken to the victim.
Sources say Marrogi also blew up on Saturday night and there is frustration among corrections officers about his behaviour.
A Department of Justice and Community Safety spokeswoman said prisoners who assault staff risk extra time behind bars.
“The safety and wellbeing of staff is our top priority – any act of violence against our hardworking corrections workers is treated seriously and referred to police,” the spokeswoman said.
“Any prisoner responsible for injuring a prison officer faces significant consequences, including extra time in prison.”
A Community and Public Sector Union spokesman said Corrections Victoria and the Department of Justice needed to do more than “parrot platitudes about officer safety being a priority”.
“Assaults on staff are becoming increasingly violent. There’s more focus on placating the offenders,” the spokesman said.
“The safety regulator needs to prosecute this unsafe system of work.”
In 2022, Marrogi received a three-month sentence for assaulting two officers at Barwon.
He kicked and spat at the workers after being told that his time was up in the jail’s phone room.
That same year it emerged Marrogi had masterminded a multimillion drug empire behind bars.
Unbeknown to prison authorities, Marrgoi spent hours each day on the phone co-ordinating the illicit activities of his Notorious Crime Family gang.
The Australian Federal Police charged him with the importation of a 69kg consignment of methamphetamine and heroin which arrived at Melbourne Airport concealed among packets of magnets and green tea in 2022.
The drugs had an estimated street value of between $24m and $34m.
His girlfriend Antonietta Mannella was highly involved in the drug operation.
The pair trafficked a commercial quantity of 1,4 butanediol, sold as the party drug GHB, which was intercepted on a truck by police in Horsham.
Mannella was sentenced to 13 years imprisonment while Marrogi will stay locked up until he’s in his 60s.
