Gangland boss George Marrogi has been charged with a jailhouse arson.

The Notorious Crime Family gang founder is facing a count of criminal damage by fire over an incident in maximum security Barwon Prison, near Geelong.

The fire is believed to have broken out earlier this year.

Marrogi has been locked up in Barwon since 2016 where he is serving a long stretch for murder and high-level drug offences.

He will face Geelong Magistrates’ Court on November 7.

It has been a turbulent period for Marrogi, despite him being locked up under the highest security rating.

The 34-year-old last year pleaded guilty to assaulting two officers at Barwon and was sentenced to three months in jail.

He spat in the face of one after being told his time was up on a telephone and kicked the other in the stomach the next day.

Marrogi was earlier this year sentenced to 22 years in prison for running a major drug trafficking ring from inside Barwon.

He and his girlfriend Antonietta Mannella co-ordinated huge international shipments until a massive Australian Federal Police bust brought the scheme undone in April last year.

It is almost seven years since Marrogi was arrested and charged over the murder of Kadir Ors at Campbellfield Plaza in Melbourne’s northern suburbs.

Ors was talking to two other men at a bus stop when the killer pulled up in a Holden Commodore, opening fire on the victim and finishing him off outside an Officeworks store.

The Marrogi family was rocked earlier this month when the crypt of George’s sister Meshilin was desecrated at Preston General Cemetery.

It was the only resting place disturbed and police are investigating whether those responsible had been trying to steal her body.
