A father whose daughters suffered serious burns when the house they were in was deliberately lit on fire says their lives will “never be the same again”.
Kylie Griffiths, 36, perished when her Sutherland St, Albanvale home was set alight allegedly by her husband Roland Griffiths, 38, on March 14.
Five of the couple’s children were at home during the arson attack, as well as two of Mr Griffith’s stepchildren, Aaliah, 17, and Tyra Johnson, 16.
Police allege Ashley Johnson’s daughters had fallen victim to their stepfather, Roland Griffiths, who was last week charged with murder and attempted murder.
Police allege Mr Griffiths used a flammable liquid to ignite the family home.
“It has left the girls without a mum and they have lost everything they have ever had in the fire.”
Mr Johnson said his daughter, Tyra, had sustained burns to 52 per cent of her body and was in a coma for a week at the Royal Children’s hospital, where she remains receiving treatment more than two months later.
“She has had a surgery every week. She requires grafting for both arms hands legs and feet,” he said.
“(The doctors have been) borrowing spare skin from anywhere available that wasn’t burnt.
“We are counting our blessings Tyra pulled through, but her life will never be the same again.
“Mentally, they are in a very bad place and scared. They watched their mother be murdered and they are struggling.”
Mr Johnson said Tyra loved playing cricket and hoped to make the Australian team in the future while Aaliah loved her cars and wanted to be a mechanic.
Mr Griffiths was remanded to appear in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on September 7 for committal mention.
The investigation is ongoing.
