A woman has died after her home was allegedly set alight by her husband while she and her children were inside.
Kylie Griffiths, 36, had been fighting for her life at The Alfred hospital since Monday night but died early this morning.
Roland Griffiths, 37, allegedly ignited a flammable liquid at the Sutherland St property about 5.20pm on Monday which caused wife Kylie and their teenage daughter to catch on fire.
Ms Griffiths, 36, was seen running from the house with flames on her back and burns to her face.
Mr Griffiths remains in hospital with serious injuries and is under police guard.
Another five children, including a nine-month-old baby, escaped uninjured.
Mr Griffiths – who allegedly poses under the alias “Robin Banks” online – was due to face Sunshine Magistrates’ Court on June 7 for recklessly causing injury.
It comes as neighbours said Mr Griffiths had previously threatened to “blow up” the family home.
One said multiple attempts to contact public housing authorities in a bid to remove him from the street fell on deaf ears.
“All of our complaints have been ignored, people in the street wanted him out,” the neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous for fear of repercussions, said. “He has about 10 words in his vocabulary, and it’s all, ‘F this, f that’.”
On Tuesday Mr Griffiths had not been questioned or charged. The injured 17-year-old sustained upper-body burns and was in a stable condition in the Royal Children’s Hospital. The uninjured children were staying with family.
Twenty-six firefighters took 30 minutes to bring the fire under control on Monday. Forensic detectives from the arson and explosives squad returned to the single-storey brick home on Tuesday to comb for further clues.
The front yard was strewn with children’s toys.
Social media posts show the Griffths as a happy suburban couple, who married in 2020.
Mr Griffiths posted photos from their wedding day saying “best day ever”.
He also shared footage performing burnouts in a blue Holden Commodore.
“Just some lockdown skidies (sic), tearing up Deer Park,” Mr Griffiths said.
Police say the investigation remains ongoing.
