Charges have been withdrawn against a man accused of waving a hammer as he chased former Comanchero Hawre Sherwani through freeway traffic.
Hasan Gunes was accused of a frightening roadside confrontation with Sherwani, a violent gangland figure who was murdered at Caroline Springs in January.
Police had alleged Gunes, 32, ran Sherwani off the Western Highway at Ravenhall after a sustained road rage incident in July, 2023.
He was accused of chasing him on foot while brandishing a hammer as other drivers looked on in shock.
Witnesses reportedly said Gunes had shouted as he pursued him between cars then through grassland.
Gunes was later charged with reckless conduct endangering injury.
Victoria Police has confirmed those counts were withdrawn two months before the January murder of Sherwani.
A hit team posing as police intercepted Sherwani in Caroline Springs.
Sherwani’s life had been in danger for some time.
His house had been the subject of firebombings and he was lucky to escape with his life when a shooter fired at him more than 20 times as he walked his dog at Fraser Rise in March last year.
A $1 million murder contract was on the head of Sherwani – known in the underworld as “Harry the Commo” – at time he was killed.
No charges have yet been laid in the Sherwani murder, or in the case of his associate Robert Issa, who was gunned down in a Craigieburn shopping centre car park in October, 2023.
