Police are hunting a shooter who left a man fighting for life with serious gunshot wounds in Hampton on Monday night.
It is believed the offender opened fire from a car on Prince St just before midnight.
A man in his 30s was treated for upper and mid body injuries and transported to The Alfred Hospital where he remains in critical condition.
Police were unable to locate the offender or the vehicle following a search of the area.
Officers were at Prince St on Wednesday morning to speak to neighbours and assess the scene.
A large portion of the street was cordoned off with police tape.
One shaken up resident told the Herlad Sun the incident occurred right outside her home.
She said she heard a man and a woman shouting before the sudden “pop” of a gun.
She said a car then sped off and when she looked out of the window, she saw a body on the ground.
“I was shaking,” she said.
The resident said those involved in the incident had caused “a lot of trouble” on the street and that she often heard shouting coming from the house.
Another neighbour said she also heard the gun shot and the screech of the wheels of the car.
She believe the car sped off towards South Rd.
Others remarked that those from the house had a “history” of trouble and said that police had visited a few times prior.
He said that it was a “frightening” prospect to have had a shooting so close.
