A Benalla woman who was allegedly strangled with an electrical cord before having boiling water poured over her body feared her attackers were “going to kill” her.
Sally-Anne Edmondstone is recovering in hospital after she was tortured, allegedly by a man and a woman staying in her home, on August 12.
The 29-year-old was left with seven fractures to her ribs, four in her upper spine, a fracture to her temple, burns all over her body and a swollen neck and throat after the pair allegedly strangled, punched and kicked her.
They also allegedly poured boiling water over Ms Edmondstone before smashing her head through a wall.
Ms Edmondstone’s mother Wendy Schultz told the Herald Sun her daughter thought her attackers “would have killed her” if she hadn’t escaped through her bedroom window.
Ms Schultz said her daughter was able to cut through the electrical cord wrapped around her throat with a pair of scissors found in her bedroom before she tried to escape.
“I’ve been over to her place and there’s blood all over her bedroom floor,” Ms Schutlz said.
“There is a hole (in) the wall, through the plaster.”
Ms Schultz says her daughter’s “survival instincts just kicked in” as she eventually managed to flee through her window and alert a neighbour.
“She thought ‘it is now or never’,” Ms Schultz said.
“She got out through the bedroom window with fractured ribs and spine and got across the road to a neighbour.
“If she didn’t get out, I think I would’ve been burying her this week.
“She honestly thinks (her attackers) would have killed her.”
Ms Edmondstone had allowed Rebecca Ann Williams, 40, and Callum Kirk, 35, to stay at her Benalla home while they searched for a place to live.
They are now accused of carrying out the torture of the 29-year-old and are charged with recklessly causing serious injury.
The Herald Sun understands police are considering further charges.
Mr Kirk, of North Wangaratta, and Ms Williams — who are both being held in custody — will face a committal mention in the Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court on November 7.
Ms Schultz has set up a fundraiser to support her daughter’s ongoing recovery in The Alfred in Melbourne.
“She feels like this is rock bottom, she doesn’t want to go back home, I can’t blame her because she’s so traumatised,” she said.
“I’m just so lucky and happy that she’s still with us.”
