A BMW hit speeds of 220km/h in a police chase through Melbourne’s suburbs before crashing into a Malvern power pole.

Three people have been charged after a high speed police chase came to a crashing end in Malvern.

Police were alerted to reports of a carjacking in Doncaster around 7.30pm on Thursday.

The stolen vehicle, a black BMW X5, was spotted on the Monash Freeway near Stud Road at 1.30am on Friday.

A dramatic police chase ensued, with the Air Wing tracking the car as it drove erratically through various Melbourne suburbs including Prahran, Melbourne, Flemington and Doncaster. The BMW was reportedly seen travelling at speeds more than 220km/h on the Eastern Freeway, eventually crashing into a power pole at the intersection of Dandenong Road and Malvern Street in Malvern.

The driver of the vehicle, a 23-year old Wodonga man, was escorted to hospital under police guard.

Three passengers left the car at the intersection of Dandenong Rd and Alexandra St in St Kilda East and were swifty arrested by police.

A 21-year-old Wodonga West woman and a 23-year-old Wodonga woman were charged with theft of a motor vehicle.

A 19-year-old Wodonga man has been charged with theft of a motor vehicle and possess a drug of dependence.

The offending trio were bailed to appear before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on March 8.
