Oil reprised: Michael Manley runs the rule over Caulfield Guineas Day

CHRIS Waller might have mighty mare Winx in his stable but don’t be surprised if the racing fraternity is talking about another one of his runners in glowing terms after the Caulfield Guineas.

Sky Racing news update

LEADING form analyst Michael Manley says The Autumn Sun has looks a genuine star and cannot be ignored despite his short odds for the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas on Saturday.

BEST BET

THE AUTUMN SUN (R9, No. 1)

He looks a genuine star. Flew home to win the Golden Rose Stakes at Randwick over 1400n. 1600m will suit him even better with the likelihood of good speed.

RACE 1: 12.10PM INGLIS DEBUTANT STAKES (1000M)

LANIGERA (2) showed speed in the jump-out which contained Last week’s winner at Flemington Unite And Conquer and runner-up Sun City and he went to the line alongside of them. He’s bred to go quickly and from barrier three will be on the speed throughout. Lindsay Park has three starts — ANCESTRY (1), BISCARA (5) and CHAMPAGNE BOOM (6) who have all shown talent in trials/jump-outs. Champagne Boom settled off the speed in recent Flemington and finished off nicely. MOCKERY (10) showed great pace to win a Cranbourne trial. Tony McEvoy’s first starter WEDGETAIL (4) is the unknown factor.

BET: LANIGERA (CONFIDENCE LEVEL: 5/10)

THE TRAINER: JAME CUMMINGS

LANIGERA - “He’s shown bucket loads of speed that should stand him in good stead. He was held together up the straight in a trial recently and if he can harness his energy he can run well.”

RACE 2: 12.45PM WEEKEND HUSSLER STAKES (1400M)

Charlie Appleby will look at continuing his amazing record in Australia with the well performed COMICAS (1) who finished second in the Group 1 Golden Shaheen in 2017 in Dubai. SIRCONNI (8) worked hard and was grabbed in the final stride by Cliff’s Edge this track and distance last start. He’s well drawn and will again be on the speed. Former Japanese galloper FIERCE IMPACT (10) has been racing well in Sydney and should finish strongly in what should be a fast run affair. ICONOCLASM (9) had excuses last start at Moonee Valley as he had respiratory issues. FASTNET TEMPEST (4) next best.

BET: SIRCONNI EACH-WAY (8 rating)

THE TRAINER: CHARLIE APPLEBY

COMICAS - “His recent runs have been on the dirt in Dubai but I have always seen him as a horse who would do well in Australia. One of his best runs was second in the G1 Golden Shaheen on dirt last year. James Doyle has won on him and partners him again on Saturday.”

RACE 3: 1.20PM THOROUGHBRED CLUB STAKES (1200M)

Star filly SUNLIGHT (1) hasn’t started since her brave win in the Quezette Stakes this track over 1100m in August. Her trainer Tony McEvoy said after that her next start would be in this race. She’s a brilliant with six wins from nine starts and she’ll have to be with her wide draw. HUMMA HUMMA (6) is a consistent filly and she finished second to Sunlight before being placed behind Thrillster and MERYL (3). She’s drawn to be in the finish. Meryl was impressive winning at Group 3 level at The Valley last start.

BET: SUNLIGHT THE WIN (8.5 rating)

THE TRAINER: TONY McEVOY

SUNLIGHT - “She’s brilliant. She looks very well and she’s in great shape. She’s got an awkward gate but she will run very, very well.”

SUGGESTED BET: SUNLIGHT THE WIN

RACE 4: 1.55PM CAPE GRIM BEEF STEAKS (1200M)

WINTER BRIDE (3) couldn’t have been more impressive winning this track and distance last start. She took a sit last start and stormed home. She’s got a great strike rate of seven wins from 15 starts. LEATHER ’N’ LACE (14) finished off nicely for fifth in that race. COOL PASSION (2) won this race last year. She resumed with an excellent run on effort to finish fourth at Caulfield over 1100m behind Grey Shadow. BOOKER (1) is a quality mare who worked hard when she resumed and tired in the closing stages. Blinkers go on first time.

BET: WINTER BRIDE THE WIN (8 rating)

THE TRAINER: TONY MCEVOY

COOL PASSION - “She’s still coming on in the coat and there’s improvement to come in her. She’s been working well since her first-up run and from her draw she’ll get a nice cosy run. She should go close.”

RACE 5: 2.30PM SCHILLACI STAKES (1100M)

VOODOO LAD (2) flies at Caulfield where he’s had seven starts for four wins and three seconds. There’s going to be a stack of speed in this with BALL OF MUSCLE (3) and SNITTY KITTY (13) matching motors. Good effort last start when second behind Ball of Muscle who has subsequently failed in Sydney. Snitty Kitty also loves Caulfield with seven starts for three wins, three seconds and a third. Query runners are the Aidan O’Brien trio of SPIRIT OF VALOR (9), FLEET REVIEW (10) and INTELLIGENCE CROSS (8). FAATINAH (4) and veteran FLAMBERGE (1) next best.

BET: Voodoo Lad the win (8.5 rating)

THE TRAINER: HENRY DWYER

SNITTY KITTY - “It’s a good race for her. She’s going really well and she’s thrived being trained at my St Leonards property. She’ll use her speed from barrier two and she loves Caulfield.”

RACE 6: 3.10PM THOUSAND GUINEAS (1600M)

Undefeated filly SMART MELODY (5) faces her toughest challenge over 1600m but she’s in such great form she can still win. She worked early and although she tired slightly in the Thousand Guineas Prelude she still won comfortably over THRILLSTER (4) who had a tough run but kept coming to finish second. EL DORADO DREAMING (1) finished on nicely for third in that race and step up to 1600m will suit. At her only run over that distance she finished an unlucky third behind SEABROOK (3) in the Champagne Stakes at Randwick last April. Seabrook pulled up with the thumps when she failed in the Golden Rose Stakes last start. FIESTA (2) is racing in great fashion in Sydney with seconds at her past three starts including her last one behind Oohood in the Flight Stakes.

BET: SMART MELODY THE WIN (9 rating)

THE TRAINER: CHRIS WALLER

FIESTA - “She is obviously a very consistent filly. She has drawn well and has now had

the run over the tough Randwick mile so I think that will season her for the Thousand

Guineas. ”

Jungle Cat takes out the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes.
Jungle Cat takes out the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes.

RACE 7: 3.45PM TOORAK HANDICAP (1600M)

A typically open Toorak Handicap. Charlie Appleby’s JUNGLE CAT (2) rallied hard to win the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes over 1400m at Caulfield last start defeating DOLLAR FOR DOLLAR (6) and LAND OF PLENTY (5). Although he hasn’t started over 1600m Appleby believes he will handle the distance. HARTNELL (1) returned to his best with a fighting win in the Epsom Handicap. He races well at Caulfield. WAGING WAR (17) found the 1400m too short last start at Caulfield behind Cliff’s Edge. He ran good sectionals when he won over this track and distance in April. CLIFF’S EDGE (12) is underrated. SIEGE OF QUEBEC (11) didn’t have a lot of luck in the Epsom. SHILLELAGH (4) flew home in that race.

BET: JUNGLE CAT EACH-WAY (8 rating)

THE TRAINER: CHARLIE APPLEBY

JUNGLE CAT - “We were delighted he won the G1 Sir Rupert Clarke, as that was the race we had picked out for him months ago. I thought the way he ran last time that the 1600m is going to suit him even better. ”

THE TRAINER: JAMES CUMMINGS

HARTNELL - “He’s back up to 59kg, but I think that against those horses he’s very capable of being competitive with them at that weight. He’ll enjoy getting back to Caulfield where he’s still got quite a good record.”

RACE 8: 4.35PM CAULFIELD STAKES (2000M)

HUMIDOR (2) finished on strongly over 1800m for third behind

HOMESMAN (6) and TOSEN BASIL (3) last start in the Underwood Stakes here. He’ll love getting to 2000m and Damian Lane should be able to position him up nicely behind the speed. That other pair will also be hard to beat. Homesman will push forward and is tough. NIGHT’S WATCH (8) will appreciate the 2000m and he’s a horse going places. UNFORGOTTEN (12), BLAIR HOUSE (7), BENBATL (1) and D’ARGENTO also have great chances.

BET: HUMIDOR EACH-WAY (8.5 rating)

THE TRAINER: DARREN WEIR

HUMIDOR - “He is a good performer at the top level, and he will run well again.”

NIGHT’S WATCH - “In great shape, I am looking forward to seeing where he fits in. This is the best opposition he has taken on.”

TOSEN BASIL - “He is going great, he is drawn barrier two, which is good. He is the horse I am probably looking forward to the most in getting out to a trip.”

RACE 9: 5.15PM CAULFIELD GUINEAS (1600M)

THE AUTUMN SUN (1) is a star. Amazing win to get up and score in The Golden Rose coming from close to last to win over 1400m. The 1600m of the Caulfield Guineas will suit even better and they should really run along. With luck he’d be undefeated. Danger could be the consistent filly OOHOOD (15) who broke through for her maiden win in the Flight Stakes at Randwick where she scraped in. She’s a Golden Slipper and Blue Diamond placegetter so can handle the boys. NATIVE SOLDIER (2) won the Guineas Prelude in brilliant fashion and he’ll use his inside draw to lead. TAVISAN (11) went with him until the 200m in that race and battled on well for second. GEM SONG (6) has claims as does LEONARDO DA HINCHI (4)

BET: THE AUTUMN SUN THE WIN (9)

THE TRAINER: CHRIS WALLER

THE AUTUMN SUN - “He should take up a good spot from his barrier so I’m not expecting him to be that far away. It’s going to take something special to beat him.”

THE TRAINER: DARREN WEIR

NATIVE SOLDIER - “He is a beauty, the question mark for me and for everyone else would be the mile. You won’t get a horse in better order.”

RACE 10: 5.50PM HERBERT POWER STAKES (2400M)

BIG DUKE (1) hasn’t had things go his way this time in but he’s a class act. Had a torrid run in The Metropolitan as he struck trouble at the start and then was held up for a run in the straight. He’s a class act as he showed with his fourth in the Melbourne Cup last year. BRIMHAM ROCKS (8) was just beaten in the Metropolitan Stakes. RISING RED (9) held on well for second behind Night’s Watch over 2000m at Caulfield last start. LORD FANDANGO (6) won this race last year and he ran on nicely for first-up third in the Benalla Cup. GALLIC CHIEFTAIN (5) ran on strongly for second in the JRA Cup. MISS ADMIRATION (11) is better than Metropolitan failure last start. Imports headed by DAL HARRAILD (3), YUCATAN (7) and A PRINCE OF ARRAN (2) all have strong claims.

BET: BIG DUKE EACH-WAY (7 rating)

THE TRAINER: CIARON MAHER

DAL HARRAILD (3) - “He comes here with solid form and has settled in well. We’re hoping the travel has really brought him on.”
