One of the biggest Saturdays on the calendar is upon us, with Caulfield Cup day in Melbourne and The Everest day in Sydney giving us 20 races to consider for SuperCoach Racing.
Who should you pick in your team this week? Check out who our experts are starting below.
JACK FIZPATRICK’S TEAM
NATURE STRIP $500,000
Race: The Everest
For mine, he’s one of two horses who can win the world’s richest race on turf. He’s a star sprinter and now Chris Waller has taught him to settle, he can either lead at a comfortable speed or sit off Eduardo and pounce at the top of the straight. He’ll likely look the winner at the 300m – then it’s a matter of whether he can hold on.
CLASSIQUE LEGEND $500,000
Race: The Everest
A dominant winner of this race last year who has only been seen at the races once since – in Hong Kong in December. It would be a monumental training performance to get him to win first-up but he should get every chance from barrier 5. If he’s at his best, they might not be able to beat him.
SUPERCOACH PLUS: THE MAGIC METRIC TO PICK YOUR TEAM
DELPHI $350,000
Race: G1 Caulfield Cup
One of only two runners at single-figure odds for the Caulfield Cup, he was dealt a cruel blow at Wednesday night’s barrier draw. He looks to be flying, it just comes down to whether he gets any luck from the wide draw. Damien Oliver wasting down to 53kg shows how highly he rates this imported galloper.
INCENTIVISE $250,000 (CAPTAIN)
Race: G1 Caulfield Cup
The ex-Queenslander is clearly the one to beat in the Caulfield Cup, although Brett Prebble has his work cut out for him jumping from the outside gate. He might just be good enough to roll forward and make his luck though, and I’m confident enough to make him skipper this week.
EAGLES CRAG $150,000
Race: Magic Millions Grand Handicap
Looks close to a ‘good thing’ in the first on Caulfield Cup day. At around even-money, he might be able to double our punting back to start the day and pick up some SuperCoach Racing points in the process.
KAPALUA SUNSET $125,000
Race: G3 Ethereal Stakes
Speaking of ‘good things’, this filly might just be something special. I expect her to win this weekend – pretty easily, too – before going on to win the VRC Oaks.
FANGIRL $75,000
Race: Listed Reginald Allen Quality
I was happy to back her in the Flight Stakes and Thousand Guineas, so this Listed event looks more than suitable. She’s cheap as chips at $75,000, too.
GUNSTOCK $75,000
Race: G3 Neds Classic
Not dissimilar to Kapalua Sunset – I expect him to measure up in the VRC Derby later this spring. If he’s going to, he needs to be going very close here.
Jockey: James McDonald
Will wait until the jockey challenge odds are available on Saturday morning as I may change my mind, but J-Mac is a handy default setting. He’s scored more points in the first two rounds than any other jockey and has another strong book of rides this Saturday.
JETT HATTON’S TEAM
NATURE STRIP $500,000
Race: The Everest
It’s his race to lose. Think he actually maps well, the wide draw gives him time and space to get through his gears and from there it should be a similar performance to his TJ Smith Stakes effort. He’s my captain this week.
YOUNG WERTHER $325,000
Race: Group 1 Caulfield Cup
Think he’s the danger to Incentivise. Went great last start in the Turnbull and he’ll relish every bit of 2400m. Drawn well in barrier eight while the favourite won’t have it easy from gate 20.
NIMALEE $325,000
Race: Group 2 Tristarc Stakes
She’s flying. 1400m looks about her right distance and she’s drawn to get the run of the race with Damien Oliver in the saddle.
HANDLE THE TRUTH $250,000
Race: The Kosciuszko
Keith Dryden told me at the start of his preparation that Handle The Truth had come back equally, if not better than where he was at when winning this race in 2019. His two runs have been great and I’m confident he can add another Kosciuszko to the C.V.
INCENTIVISE $250,000
Race: Group 1 Caulfield Cup
Despite the tricky draw, he’s got to go in off his last two efforts when winning the Makybe Diva and Turnbull Stakes. Could be anything and he’s still cheap for just $250,000.
HE’S A BALTER $225,000
Race: Group 2 Caulfield Sprint
He’s the fit horse, expect him to sit outside Malkovich and with just 55kg, it wouldn’t surprise to see the gelding have a strong kick and keep going.
FANGIRL $75,000
Race: Listed Reginald Allen Quality
Made a case for her a few weeks back in the Flight Stakes, so she’s certainly a leading hope here. For just $75,000, Fangirl has to go in.
GUNSTOCK $75,000
Race: Group 3 Caulfield Classic
Hit the line like a horse that will relish 2000m. For just $75,000, he’ll be in the finish and give us some points along with extra cap space next week.
Jockey: Jye McNeil
Sticking solid with Jye this week. 10 rides and most are great chances, highlighted by Gunstock ($3.40), Buffalo River ($3.30) and Enthaar ($5.50).
TIM MICHELL’S TEAM
Gytrash $475,000
Colette $450,000
Noncomformist $325,000
Incentivise $250,000 (captain)
Malkovich $225,000
Steinem $150,000
Kapalua Sunset $125,000
Tiz Magic $50,000
Jockey: James McDonald
I’m little chance of jagging the winner in The Everest and although I like a few of the $500k horses like Nature Strip, I have no money to spare. Nonconformist put in an eye-catching run last start and would be my EW bet if I was having a flutter. There’s a few decent options in handicap and listed races this week but group races are where the real points are. After so many coaches went with similar stables last week this feels like it could be a key round. Colette looks worth paying up for in a G2 and although Steinem is in the same race it’s a blowout hope. I like Gunstock so might still bank the $75k and cheer for a quinella with Tiz Magic in the G3. James McDonald has done the job the first two rounds so why not go for a hat-trick?
AL PATON’S TEAM
Nature Strip $500,000 (captain)
Classic Legend $500,000
Incentivise $250,000
High Supremecy $175,000
Home Affairs $175,000
Promise of Success $175,000
Kapalua Sunset $125,000
Fangirl $75,000
Jockey: James McDonald
Much tougher picking a team this week compared to Round 2 with pretty even fields in the Group 1 races that offer the most points. Incentiise is a must in the Caulfield Cup at that price and I’m loading up with the two favourites in the Everest, where a much smaller field gives me some more security about getting among the Group 1 points, plus Home Affairs because it rates highly in Rob Sutherland’s Magic Metric. Outside the two big races hopefully a few short-priced runners can get some wins and build the bank. Good luck, everyone!
DAN BATTEN’S TEAM
Nature Strip $500,000
Classique Legend $500,000
Incentivise $250,000 (captain)
Malkovich $225,000
Vianello $150,000
Kapulua Sunset $125,000
Fangirl $75,000
Gunstock $75,000
Jockey: James McDonald
JETT AND JACK’S ULTIMATE STRATEGY GUIDE
Technically the Caulfield Cup is the only Group 1 of the weekend but for SuperCoach Racing players, The Everest is considered a G1 – with The Kosciuszko considered a G3 – for fantasy purposes.
Racenet’s Jett Hatton and Punters’ Jack Fitzpatrick sit down to discuss their strategies ahead of Round Three.
GROUP 1 RACING
Caulfield Cup (2400m)
The general consensus prior to the barrier draw was Incentivise is over the line. However, after drawing the widest gate, punters are starting to reassess those thoughts. From a SuperCoach Racing point-of-view, he still looks a solid option as he’s a $2.50 favourite for a G1 and costs just $250,000. Second-favourite Delphi, an impressive winner last Saturday in the Herbert Power, has also been handed an awkward draw. Given he’s the only other horse at single-figure odds, the options are wide open if you want another Caulfield Cup runner – especially given most in the field are reasonably well priced in the mid-range bracket.
The Everest (1200m)
It’s a field full of quality, which is reflected by the prices of the majority of runners from a SuperCoach perspective. Market fancies Nature Strip and Classique Legend are both $500,000, while most of the others aren’t too far behind. If you can afford to have two Everest runners, all power to you. If not, good luck picking the winner given 11 of the 12 look to have some hope. But, seriously, what is Embracer doing in this field?
OFF BROADWAY
Here are some horses to consider from outside of the big races:
Jett
Handle The Truth ($250,000) – The Kosciuszko (1200m)
Keith Dryden told me at the start of his preparation that Handle The Truth had come back equally well, if not better than where he was at when winning this race in 2019. His two runs have been great and I’m confident he can add another Kosciuszko to the CV.
Fangirl ($75,000) - Listed Reginald Allen Quality (1400m)
Made a case for her a few weeks back in the Flight Stakes, so she’s certainly a leading hope here. For just $75,000, Fangirl has to go in.
Fitzy
Kapalua Sunset ($125,000) – G3 Ethereal Stakes (2000m)
Her maiden win had to be seen to be believed - horses just don’t win by 7L+ over 1800m at just their second career start. For mine she’s the one to beat in the VRC Oaks and I think she’ll win this on her way through.
Fangirl ($75,000) – Listed Reginald Allen Quality (1400m)
Was willing to back her in the Flight Stakes and Thousand Guineas, so she must be a hope in this Listed affair. Cheap as chips at just $75,000.
JOCKEY TIP
Jett
Jye McNeil
Sticking solid with Jye this week. He has 10 rides and most are great chances, highlighted by Gunstock ($3.40), Buffalo River ($3.30) and Enthaar ($5.50).
Fitzy
James McDonald
I’d still wait to confirm with the jockey challenge odds on Saturday morning, but J-Mac is a pretty good safety net. Australia’s leading hoop is the leading point scorer across the first two rounds and has another strong book of rides on Saturday.
LOCK OF THE ROUND
Here are our must-have horses for round two:
Jett
Nature Strip ($500,000) – The Everest (1200m)
It’s his race to lose. Think he actually maps well, the wide draw gives him time and space to get through his gears and from there it should be a similar performance to his TJ Smith Stakes effort.
Fitzy
Incentivise ($250,000) – G1 Caulfield Cup (2400m)
There’s no doubt the barrier draw threw a spanner in the works, but he’s still the horse to beat - the market tells you that. He costs just $250,000 and is the clear market favourite in a G1 - he picks himself.
