Nonconformist thrashes rivals but it’s off to the spelling paddock

It was another training masterclass from Grahame Begg when promising stayer Nonconformist swallowed up hot favourite Adelaide Ace to easily win the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes.

TAB market update: ALL STAR MILE

Exciting staying prospect Nonconformist turned the tables on Adelaide Ace and left him in his wake with a hollow win in the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m).

Despite the merit of the three and a quarter lengths victory his trainer Grahame Begg won’t change from his plan to send him to the spelling paddock.

“He’ll have eight weeks off now and I’ll bring him back in for the spring,” Begg said.

Begg wasn’t surprised Nonconformist had turned the tables on Adelaide Ace who started at $1.85 last time as he instructed his jockey Jordan Childs to be patient and wait until the closing stages to unleash his finishing burst and he followed those instructions to a tee.

At his previous start Nonconformist was beaten by Adelaide Ace in the Group 2 Autumn Classic when both horses worked forward and shared the lead.

“I said to Jordan just trust the horse. He wasn’t suited by the sit and sprint nature in the Autumn Classic. I said to him as long as you’ve got a bum to follow you’ll be right. It was a great ride as he waited and took his medicine and as a result he really let down,” Begg said.

Childs said Nonconformist had a bright future and was doing everything right despite having a few quirks which still needed to ironed out.

“He’s not there yet mentally.”

Adelaide Ace looked certain to win before the turn but he had no answer to Nonconformist’s finishing burst.

VRC Oaks winner Miami Bound was squeezed at the start and settled last. She past two horses in the run home to finish fourth.
