Teen Waratahs Zach Fittler, Joe Walsh, Charlie Poynton, Tylan Berryman named in sevens squad

They have been starting for the NSW Waratahs in the National U16 rugby championship. Now a quartet of talent, including the son of a NRL legend, has been named in another squad altogether.

They are seen as the future of rugby and now four of NSW’s rising XV stars have been identified for the sevens side of the game as well.

Joe Walsh, Charlie Poynton, Tylan Berryman and Zach Fittler are teammates in the Gen Blue Waratahs team currently leading the U16 national rugby championships being played between Australia’s five Super Rugby clubs.

All have been standouts in the opening three rounds where they and their teammates are not only undefeated but have racked up the biggest win of the series, an 81-0 thumping of the Melbourne Rebels last round.

All four have scored tries for the Tahs and all have now been named in the NSW Rugby Union U17 youth sevens trial squads.

“They are very elusive,’’ said Sevens program boss Michael Doyle.

“What we look for in sevens rugby is speed, elusiveness, ability to step off both feet, agility and ball control into contact.

“We also want them to have a really good experience in sevens.

“The kids really enjoy it. It’s all mixed as well, which is good.’’

Zach Fittler is a cross code athlete who also plays for the Sydney Roosters and is the son of Brad Fittler.

Also named in the U15 boys squad are Gen Blue players Dylan Hall, Jarvis Orr, Tom Haslam and Reilly Caswell.

Players will compete in trial matches in early December in Sydney.

Players named in the squads hail from both city and regional areas including Newcastle, the mid-north coast, Central Coast, Illawarra and Narrabri.

Penrith, the Western Sydney Two Blues, Southern Districts, Manly, Gordon, Eastwood, Warringah and Sydney University are some of the Sydney clubs with multiple representatives.
