Livestream Hockey: Australian U18 championships – Day 4 in Launceston

Day 4 of the Australian Under 18 Hockey Championships was action packed – if you missed the matches, you can watch every replay here.

After a rest day in Launceston, the U18s boys and girls were back in action for day four of the Australian hockey championships.

U18 boys, Pool A: Victoria 1 – Queensland 1

A frenetic second half has seen Victoria and Queensland fight out a thrilling draw on Monday morning.

With goals hard to come by, the teams traded blows with Victorian skipper Liam Henderson striking the first blow in the second quarter, before the Queenslanders tied it up in the third courtesy of Zac McCoombes.

A desperate final term followed as the sides rallied, with Queensland entering its attack several times in the final minute as it threatened to pinch the match.

U18 girls, Pool A: NSW State 0 – Queensland 0

A stalemate has played out between New South Wales’ state outfit and Queensland, despite a desperate last quarter from both sides.

While NSW held most of the play in the final term, it was unable to capitalise on several opportunities before Queensland launched a last-ditch bid to snare the win with a flying shot at goal in a heart-stopping final 20 seconds.

U18 boys, Pool A: Tasmania 3 – New South Wales Blue 0

New South Wales proved no match for Tasmania as the winners’ unrelenting attack prevailed from the second quarter onward.

Richter Marx opened Tassie’s account in the second just ahead of half time before Milo Gee and Henry Wright found goals within a couple of minutes of each other in the shadows of three quarter time.

U18 girls, Pool A: Western Australia 2 – Tasmania 1

Maddison Fenwick and Saysha Pillay continued their strong tournaments for Western Australia, edging their side past Tasmania.

WA was challenged in the second term after Tasmania’s Maddison Brooks levelled up Fenwick’s first-quarter strike from the field, before Pillay goaled from a penalty stroke early in the third to launch her side ahead.

U18 boys, Crossover: Victoria Development 5 – Northern Territory 4

A see-sawing last quarter has seen Victoria’s development side post a thrilling win over the Northern Territory, rallying from a goal down late with two match-winning majors in the dying minutes.

But the match was full of twists and turns.

The NT was dealt a three-goal half-time deficit inflicted by two second term goals from Vic skipper Miller Smith along with a single to Harry Bradbury, but it hit the ground running in the third to peg the margin back.

Back-to-back goals within a minute to NT captain Zach Rakkas and Jett Claydon at the start of the second half announced game-on, before the skipper struck again to nail his third with about five minutes left to pinch the lead 4-3.

Enter Victoria’s Jeffrey Kitson, who came to the rescue with back-to-back goals in the dying stages to wrestle back the lead for his side and seal an emphatic 5-4 win.

U18 girls, Crossover: South Australia 2 – Victoria Development 0

A dominant final quarter has seen SA break through for their first win of the tournament.

In a tense affair, the defences remained on top for the first three terms but a penalty corner goal from Mercedes Theobald broke the deadlock.

SA remained relentless in their attack with Zoe Nunn giving her side a handy two-goal buffer just five minutes later.

U18 boys, Pool B: ACT 3 – South Australia 1

The ACT has added to SA’s pain with a comfortable win on Monday afternoon.

Jesse Absolom gave his side the lead in the second quarter with SA thinking they had levelled the game midway through the third from a penalty corner only for their goal to be disallowed.

Joshua Carter then rubbed salt into the SA wounds when he struck later in the term for the ACT.

Aiden Dooley put the icing on the cake with a strong finish in the final quarter of an hour.

Mitchell Dell scored a consolation for SA with only seconds remaining.

U18 girls, Pool B: Victoria 6 – NSWB 0

There is currently no stopping Victoria who have sent yet another strong message to the rest of the competition.

A double from Evie Stansby set the tone for the undefeated Victorians who put the game beyond doubt at half-time thanks to a three-goal second quarter.

Bridgette De La Mere, Enya Talbot, Josie Lawton and Zali Ward also found their way onto the scoresheet.

U18 boys, Pool B: Western Australia 5 – NSWS 3

WA and NSW’s state team have played out an absolute thriller to finish the boys competition.

The sides traded blows in the second half as the boys in sky blue threatened a remarkable comeback from 5-1 down courtesy of two goals from Dylan Downey.

But in the end, WA hung on with early goals in the final term to Adamson twins, Angus and Hamish, proving to be the difference between the states.

For WA, Ian Grobbelaar, Max Freedman and Patrick Andrew also found their way onto the scoresheet, while Lukas Gremm scored the opener for NSWS.

U18 girls, Pool B: Northern Territory 3 – Australian Capital Territory 0

Northern Territory has made it back-to-back wins with an impressive three-goal victory over the ACT.

Sophie Edwards scored a double from penalty corners, her first goals of the tournament, either side of Freya Horton’s strike in the second term as the NT ran away with the contest.

CAMPESE WANTS TO JOIN LEGEND OF FAMILY NAME

She’s the daughter of a rugby icon who has the bold ambition to follow in her father’s footsteps and represent Australia but in not one, but an incredible four sports.

Sienna Campese is starring for the NSW Blues at the Under-18 hockey championships in Tasmania being livestreamed across News Corp websites, including The Daily Telegraph, and boasts one of the most famous surnames in Australian sport as the daughter of Wallabies great David Campese.

But the 16-year-old has ambitions to build her own legacy by taking her talents to the top of not just hockey but water polo, tennis and the sport that made her father a household name, rugby union.

“I’m hoping (to represent Australia in multiple sports) – I never thought it was possible, but from some of the inspirational movies I’ve watched and stories I’ve heard of ladies playing different sports for Australia, since hearing that it’s opened up a whole new world of opportunity,” Sienna, who is also a gun netballer, told the Sunday Telegraph.

Rising hockey star Sienna Campese, daughter of Wallabies great David Campese, for the NSW Blues at the under-18 national championship.

“Recently I’ve been quite torn between some sports, because I really enjoy water polo and tennis as well and my coaches have told me if I put in the hours I can get to a pretty high level.”

Her club and NSW coach, Alan Charlton, believes Campese has the talent and drive to reach the highest level in hockey.

“She has a lot of intensity, not just when she plays but when she trains which especially in training is quite rare,” Charlton said.

“In all the teams I coach I wish I had every player with that level of intensity. She rubs off on a lot of people and her energy and effort makes other people want to lift.

“It’s not unusual for me to get a message saying ‘I’m not going to be 100% at training today, I’ve just been at a tennis tournament all day’ or ‘I’ve got to leave early to get to water polo’. But especially when they’re young, I encourage them to throw themselves into as many sports as they can.”

Having a crack at so many sports is not just a huge commitment from Sienna, but also to parents David and Lara – who have put in big hours helping their daughter become a rising star of four sports.

From sprint training sessions with dad to mum racking up the kilometres in the family car ferrying Sienna to and from hockey training in Wollongong four times a week, Sienna’s rise has been a true family affair.

But carrying the Campese name brings with it some interesting moments for Sienna, who is occasionally reminded of her father’s exploits on the rugby field – such as when a recent visit to get an x-ray on an injured foot led to a photo request from her doctor with the goose step king.

“It’s more just ‘he’s my dad’ and the only time you really remember it is when some old guy comes running up shouting ‘oh my gosh! David Campese!’” she said.

“I don’t like to flaunt it. Yes, he was amazing and it’s phenomenal what he did but I’m just trying to make my own mark in a way, in my own sport and doing my own thing.”
