Sisters Savannah and Charlotte, who currently compete in the same division, are only separated by one place on the Queensland junior rankings with Savannah in third and her younger sister in fourth, while both sit inside the top 20 on the national rankings.
All three athletes said they hoped to perform to the best of their abilities but, more importantly, wanted to finish ahead of each other to earn the prestigious family bragging rights.
“When we train for competitions, we get competitive doing things like heat-based drills, but when the surf is pumping, we push each other and have fun,” Cooper said.
“Of course it gets competitive with my sister and I, because she always wants to beat me, but I never want to let that happen,” Savannah said.
“It gets very competitive out in the water, because being the younger sister I want to beat my older sister all the time,” Charlotte said.
The trio are part of a large contingent of Sunshine Coast surfers taking on the challenge of the Phillip Island Junior Pro this week. Check out the full list below.
They each hoped to make a push for a finals spot and said making it to the professional level would be a dream come true.
“For me, it would be a dream to make it to the professional stage in surfing, as it can provide a career opportunity and a chance to surf with the best surfers in the world,” Cooper said.
“I would love to become a professional surfer, as I would like nothing more than to travel the world with my friends doing what we love,” Savannah said.
“I have many dreams I want to achieve in my career but one of them is to make it to the professional stage because you will always be surrounded by really good surfers,” Charlotte said.
After all three children were introduced to surfing by their dad, Justin, he said it had been a thrill to watch them grow.
“As parents, we have been blessed that all of our kids love the same sport and we love the lifestyle and opportunities surfing provides for them,” he said.
“They have been supported by their local board rider’s club, Windansea, since they were very young and are surrounded by a wonderful team of experts such as their coach Matt Clark, their board shaper Jamie Byrne, and the Ocean Performance Centre for their strength and conditioning.
“A shout out has to go to Surfing Queensland and their various sponsors, Rivvia Projects, Ghanda Clothing, Face Jam and Sunbutter Skincare and while they take their surfing seriously, they are also very passionate about the ocean, the environment and the friendships they make with the other grommets.”
The three Unity College, Caloundra students said they would be hoping to get a feel for the conditions before competing and representing Queensland at the Australian National Junior Titles in late November.
