PREVIEW

The Phillip Island Junior Pro, in its inaugural year as part of the Surfing Australia national junior tour, will carry a huge 10,000 national rankings point prize for the top surfer in each division.

Campbell, who has been a judge for several years with Surfing Victoria, said the best surfer’s will come down to the ones who are most fearless and can adapt the fastest.

With the competition to be held on Phillip Island, it opens the possibility of multiple beaches, and varied conditions, being used across the week, from the sharp left-hand point break of Penguin Parade to the open beach break of Cape Woolamai.

“With any contest that happens on Phillip Island, the surfer that can adapt the most to the conditions will come out on top,” Campbell said.

“The different beaches we can use during the event will completely change the different styles of surfing we will see.”

Campbell also gave an insight to how each wave is judged, so people tuning in know what to look out for and why a certain score might be given.

Every wave ridden is given a score between 0.1 and 10.0 based on a number of factors. The surfer’s final heat score is calculated by adding their two best single-wave scores together.

The wave scores are decided by a panel of four judges, which will be overseen across the week by World Surf League judge Todd Rosewell.

Queensland's Isla Huppatz will compete at the Phillip Island Junior Pro.

“Whoever is doing the biggest turns on the biggest sections will score the highest,” Campbell said.

“They use a point of reference off another wave to dictate where the score goes from there. If someone is going to get an eight-point wave or above, that is considered in the perfect category.

“In the judges book, it says commitment and degree of difficulty, innovation and aggressive manoeuvres, variety of manoeuvres, speed, power and flow. That is what they are looking for.

“It has nothing to do with the amount of turns but more the quality and difficulty of the turns done.”

With the latest swell forecast predicting up to three metre waves, Campbell said viewers would be in for a treat.

World champion Willis Droomer will be at the Phillip Island Junior Pro.

The Phillip Island Junior Pro will host the who’s who of rising talent across the country, including current Australian top-ranked surfers Dane Henry, Isla Huppatz, Ocean Lancaster, Ava Holland, Locana Cullen and Eliza Richardson.

Reigning U16 boys ISA world champion Willis Droomer will also compete in the U18s boys division chasing valuable rankings points as he aims to rocket his way up the national standings from number 92.
