DAY 2 REPORT

Boys U15 100m final race favourite Kevin De Silva has produced a superb run to lead all the way from fellow Victorian Owen Veltman.

Clocking 11.07sec for the journey, De Silva had built a significant lead by midrace as he added another gold to go with his 200m gold from day one.

It was also a mighty effort from Veltman, who had finished second in the 400m final only a couple of hours earlier.

Victorians Zaria Dalton and Georgia Foster then produced identical result in the girls U15 100m final when they also finished one-two.

Foster jumped well to lead the field before Dalton stormed home over the top to claim the gold medal in 12.61sec.

Victoria would also take the boys U14 100 final gold, with Ben Tornatora blitzing his rivals, as he has done nearly all weekend.

Earlier, there was one name on everyone’s lips and his latest performance at the Australian Little Athletics Championships in Adelaide makes it easy to understand why.

Queensland’s Tate Van Camp eclipsed his day one deeds with gold in the boys U15 1500m final on Sunday.

But it was the manner in which Van Camp went about his business, delivering another effortless victory on day two of the championships, which caught the eye.

Hanging back for the first 1000m, Van Camp made a decisive and calculated move entering the home straight on the second last occasion at the SA Athletics Stadium.

His acceleration past the finishing line and down the back straight was breathtaking as he quickly put 40m on his rivals before switching off to cruise over the line.

Clearly not interested in his time of 4min27.89sec, it was as clinical and dominant display as one could imagine.

Following his success in the 800m final and an Australian Best Performance on day one and Sunday’s 1500m final, Van Camp was narrowly pipped in a pulsating 400m final.

But his bold run further underlined his versatility as Victoria’s Owen Veltman came again after being headed into the straight to run down the Queenslander right on the line.

Queensland’s Eloise Nealon and Tasmania’s Grace Matthews fought out a thrilling girls U14 400m final, gaining the upper hand in the final 20m after an enthralling struggle.

Nealon reeled in Matthews at the 150m mark but the Tasmanian raised another effort in the home straight to almost draw level.

Their duel was a fitting reflection of the closeness of the 400m finals in the different age groups.

Earlier, Zoe St John’s tactical nous set herself up for a gold medal performance in the girls U15 1500m final, which was part of a combined final for the age group.

As the pacemaker, the confident Queenslander went out hard and never relinquished the lead as she comfortably held off Victoria’s Madeleine Kearney.

Tyson White gave the Adelaide audience something to saviour with victory in the boys U14 1500m final.

The South Australian embraced the parochial support as he put paid to his rivals with a powerful performance, maintaining a significant advantage all the way down the home straight.

Tears of joy post race have emphasised just how much victory in the girls U15 90m hurdles meant to Lucy Veenvliet.

The Victorian capitalised on a strong start as she held off pre-race favourite Leah Leembruggen.

The Queenslander was a little out of shape early in the race, while Veenvliet’s first two hurdles were sharp.

In the boys U15 100m hurdles, Queensland’s Kanay Miller has made the most of a lightning start to see off Nate Hall’s mid-race challenge and pull away from the Victorian.

All the ALAC action for the two days was exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV.

DAY 1 REPORT

Queensland young gun Tate Van Camp left every other runner in his wake to claim gold in the boys U15 800m final and an Australian Best Performance on day one of the Australian Little Athletics Championships on Saturday.

In one of the highlights on the opening day, Van Camp – fresh off winning the same event at the Queensland State Little Athletics Championships back in March – bested that run with a time 1:54.76 at the SA Athletics Stadium.

All the opening day ALAC action was exclusively live streamed and KommunityTV cameras will return to capture day two on Sunday.

Leading the pack from the outset, Van Camp converted a strong 20m lead at the first turn into an almost 40m lead on the back straight of his final lap.

He then cruised down the straight to beat the 1:58 he ran at the state championships and his previous personal best of 1:55.95.

In the girls U14 800m final, Victoria’s Lillie Drechsler timed her run to perfection to claim gold.

Drechsler trailed Queensland duo Zoe Renton and Emilia Schulze at the final turn before hitting the gas as the trio approached the home straight.

The boys U14 800m final was a much tighter affair with South Australian duo Andrei Chemutov and Tyson White split by just 0.6 seconds at the line.

Chemutov won in a time of 2:05.14 with White (2:05.74) and Victoria’s Branson Botha (2:06.23) claiming silver and bronze.

One of Queensland’s best performers on day one in the field events was Jake Hambrook-Smith.

The talented young multi-event star claimed gold in the U15 boys high jump, clearing 1.91m, while he finished second in the Javelin throw with 41.13m.

Fellow Queenslander Thomas Scott won with a huge 48.50m throw.

In the 200m finals, Victoria showed its dominance taking out four of the six medals on offer.

Georgia Foster (U15 girls), Kevin De Silva (U15 boys), Ben Tornatora (U14 boys) and Jamie Ritchie (U14 girls) all took out national titles for the Vics.

Zachary Leung from NSW showed his strength to hold off a big chasing pack to triumph in the U13 boys final while Kaley Croot outlasted fellow Queenslander Sophie Whitfield to take gold in the U13 girls.

PREVIEW

Emerging track and field athletes are set to show their talents on the national stage at one of the country’s biggest junior sporting events.

The Australian Little Athletics Championships return to Adelaide this month and – for the third-straight year – the action will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV.

Stars of the future will compete at the two-day competition, which is the pinnacle event for Little Athletics and features all member associations across Australia competing in various age groups.

Hosted in Adelaide at the SA Athletics Stadium, the championships will be held on Saturday, April 26 and Sunday, April 27.

KommunityTV’s exclusive live coverage across each day will include three separate streams to cover all track events as well as select field events.

Both opening and closing ceremonies will also be covered, as well as medal presentations.

The broadcast will begin from 8.30am ACST on the Saturday with the opening ceremony, before athletes begin their events from 9.30am.

“Coles Little Athletics Australia is thrilled to once again be providing our athletes the opportunity to participate in the pinnacle national event for Little Athletics,” Little Athletics Australia chief executive Myles Foreman said.

“ALAC has a wonderful history dating back to 1973 and has provided memories for many athletes and we look forward to this continuing to grow and develop in 2025.”

While athletes will compete for individual rewards, the ALAC incorporates an overarching team’s element to the event, with individual performances contributing towards the team awards and trophies on offer.

After dominating the blue ribbon events last year, NSW will once again be one of the state’s to beat, while Victoria also experienced strong success across multiple age groups and divisions in 2024.

KommunityTV’s live coverage follows the exclusive broadcast of last month’s Little Athletics Queensland State Championships.
