DAY FOUR REPLAYS AND REPORTS

Victoria Blue 3 (Jordan Vonja 2, Thomas Nasso) defeated Victoria White 0

Victoria Blue have knocked off fellow state rivals Victoria White 3-0 to be crowned kings of the School Sport Australia Under-12 Football Championships.

After four days of thrilling competition, Queensland’s loss earlier in the day opened the door for Blue to swoop late and take all the glory.

Needing a win to claim the trophy, Blue attacked from the outset, but it would be nine minutes before they celebrated.

In what was one of the goals of the tournament, Ashton Filies long ball into the box was met on the full by Jordan Vonja’s boot. And when the ball sailed into the back of the net, Blue were on their way.

Having conceded six goals against South Australia earlier in the day, Vic White’s defence rose to another level in the battle for state supremacy.

Trailing 1-0 just minutes after the interval, White’s Ritchie Mahon only had the keeper to beat, but his match-levelling strike missed agonisingly to the right.

With Vic White still close enough to force a draw, Blue lifted, and if not for the goal post Vonja would have had his second with 19 minutes still on the clock.

The tall figure of Thomas Nasso proved a rock up front for Blue all week, and he made the most of a rare chance to double the margin in the 41st minute.

And with two minutes to play, Blue finished it in style. A lovely build up finished by Vonja to complete back-to-back championships for Victoria.

Victoria White may have finished the competition winless, but after holding the more fancied Victoria Blue to a goalless draw, they can go home with their heads held high.

Evie Stosic drove Victoria Blue into attack in the opening minute, but her shot was saved on the line.

Blue continued to dominate field position but the goal never came. Sophie Wenk almost troubled the scorers in the 17th minute, but once again the keeper was equal to the task.

With limited chances up front, White relied on the defensive prowess of Sophie McCaffery and Eilidh Sheridan to remain in contention as the sides went to the break at 0-0.

Vic Blue’s Layla Habib looked the most likely to break the deadlock after halftime. First up, the pocket rocket was kept out by the keeper, before she rattled the crossbar from the free-kick spot in the 36th minute.

Vic Blue continued to pepper the goal in the dying stages, but in the end, no-one could beat Shaylee Lane - Victoria White’s defiant goalkeeper and player of the match.

South Australia 6 (Riad Rarhidi 2, Marcel El Hamra 2, Kalan Alagich, Joshua Tassotti) defeated Victoria White 0

Replay: School Sport Australia Under-12 nationals - Victoria #2 v SA (Boys)

South Australia rounded out their 2022 campaign with three wins after defeating Victoria White 6-0 on the final day of competition at Lark Hill Sportsplex in Rockingham.

After an even midfield battle, SA started to work their way into the back field and almost struck first though Liam Oliviero.

A penalty in the 10th minute gifted SA a shot from the spot and Kalan Alagich made no mistake, hammering the ball past the keeper with his left boot for a 1-0 lead.

Riad Rarhidi’s solo effort almost brought a second, but the Henley High student wasn’t denied when his next attempt beat the keeper in the 17th minute.

Finlay Maxwell had some good touches for Victoria but they were unable to sustain the pressure and SA added another four second half goals to end their week in style.

Joshua Tassotti scored the first before Rarhidi completed his double. Then Marcel El Hamra added another two, including a magic strike to clear the outstretched keeper.

DAY THREE REPLAYS AND REPORTS

NSW 4 (Madena Moussa 2, Olivia Shaw, own goal) defeated Western Australia 0

Replay: School Sport Australia Under-12 nationals - NSW v WA (Girls)

New South Wales rounded out a fifth consecutive victory after outclassing Western Australia 4-0, and with just one game left to play on Friday, they almost have both hands on the championship trophy.

The dependable Madena Moussa was brought down in the box in just the second minute of play, and the vice captain had no trouble converting from the spot to put the Blues ahead 1-0.

Coming off a 2-0 loss in the morning game, the WA girls lacked the potency they displayed in the first two days of the competition.

Lily Sunderland came close to leveling for WA five minutes before the interval. But from then on it was a wave of Blue as the NSW girls continually found space along both flanks.

Olivia Shaw finished a sensational length of the field build up that started from the goalkeeper’s throw, and Moussa’s second put the contest to bed with 15 minutes left to play.

Moussa then showed her power from the edge of the centre circle. Her driving free kick deflecting off the keeper for NSW’s fourth of the afternoon.

The loss rounds out a difficult period for WA. Unbeaten at the start of the day, the local team now sits mid table with a 2-2 win/loss record.

Girls - ACT 1 (Olivia Jose) drew with Victoria White 1 (Eilidh Sheridan)

Replay: School Sport Australia Under-12 nationals - Victoria #2 v ACT (Girls)

Both sides entered this one on the back of three consecutive losses, so when the ACT and Victoria White finished locked at 1-1, it seemed a fair result.

In a stunning opening minute, the ACT powered out of the blocks forcing a goal line save in the first 10 seconds before winning a penalty kick.

Once again, Victoria’s acrobatic keeper denied the shot but it wasn’t long before the tables were reversed.

Olivia Jose threaded the ball through in the second minute, and given it was the Territory’s first of the tournament, the wild celebrations were justified.

As showers drifted across Lark Hill Sportsplex, Victoria eased into the game and began pressing forward.

ACT still looked the most likely, although that didn’t bother Victoria’s Eilidh Sheridan who slotted her side’s first of the competition to level the scores on the stroke of halftime.

In a tit for tat second half, both outfits created several genuine chances but lacked the finishing touch.

Grace York forced the Victorian keeper’s hand twice in the closing stages, while Sophie McCaffrey worked hard to break down the ACT backline.

Boys - NSW 3 (Aidan Loboja, Austin Craig, Noah Harb) defeated South Australia 0

Replay: School Sport Australia Under-12 nationals - SA v NSW (Boys)

New South Wales have registered their first win from four starts with a 3-0 defeat of South Australia in the School Sport Australia Under-12 Football Championships.

South Australia entered the clash after an earlier 3-0 loss to Queensland. Still smarting, they put the blowtorch on the Blues defenders, but an early goal was denied by an offside ruling.

From there, NSW enjoyed the better of play and came close to scoring from several dangerous phases orchestrated by Noah Harb and Austin Craig.

Aidan Loboja put NSW on the board in the 17th minute. After a period of sustained attacking pressure, the St Declan’s Catholic School student from Penshurst eventually found a way through the SA defenders to give NSW a 1-0 lead.

Craig was rewarded for his persistence nine minutes after halftime, the No.9 scoring after winning a battle for possession in the SA box.

SA’s Justin Scarpin almost pegged one back from a free kick, but it was the Blues who would have the last say when Harb hammered home his side’s third.

And NSW kept a clean sheet when their keeper dived full length to save a Riad Rarhidi penalty kick just seconds before the final whistle.

Girls - Victoria Blue 2 (Layla Habib, Madeline Hawke) defeated Western Australia 0

Replay: School Sport Australia Under-12 nationals - WA v Victoria #1 (Girls)

Victoria Blue remain in title contention after beating the previously in-form Western Australia 2-0 at the Lark Hill Sportsplex in Rockingham.

Western Australia had the better of the opening exchanges and were best served by Milla Butler, the skilled No.7 often beating her midfield opponent before setting a light the left sideline.

If not for several desperate goal line saves, Victoria would have been chasing their tail from the get-go.

Then with seemingly no way through at either end of the ground, it took some spectacular Victorian brilliance to break the deadlock.

A bit of class and the Vics lead

Layla Habib’s net seaking strike from at least 30m in the 14th minute will be long remembered, and the girl from Rowville Secondary College went within a whisker of repeating the dose just six minutes later.

Trailing 1-0, WA were expected to lift after the break in an effort to maintain their unbeaten record, but their hearts were broken when Madeline Hawker doubled the margin in the 28th minute.

And the Vics thought they had a third when Danielle Accardo beat the keeper after a misunderstanding between several WA defenders. But the goal was disallowed and the locals lived in hope.

In the end, Victoria proved too strong in what is shaping as an even playing field at the top of the girls table.

Boys - Victoria Blue 3 (Thomas Nasso 2, Jordan Vonja) defeated Western Australia 0

Replay: School Sport Australia Under-12 nationals - WA v Victoria #1 (Boys)

Victoria Blue kickstarted day three by extending their unbeaten record to four games with a 3-0 win over Western Australia.

With the aid of a strong breeze, Victoria spent the majority of the first half camped in WA’s half.

After several unsuccessful strikes from long range, Nate Bradley’s attempt on goal in the 11th minute then found the post - but Keilor Downs Secondary student Jordan Vonja was on hand, and he tapped in for a 1-0 lead.

Thomas Nasso doubled the score in the 13th minute, and the tall striker imposed himself in the box six minutes later when he finished a lovely cross from Zac Davis.

WA opportunities were rare and they looked most likely whenever Dhaniel Brown was on the ball.

Leading 3-0 10 minutes after the interval, Victoria exploited WA’s backline down the right wing, only for Bradley’s booming drive to once again be denied by the post.

In a more even second half, WA found their attacking rhythm, but against a busy Victoria defence, legitimate chances were few and far between.

Now, after another defeat the locals are still winless from three outings.

DAY TWO REPLAYS AND REPORTS

South Australia 4 (Joshua Tassotti 2, Ollie Budin, Riad Rarhidi ) defeated Western Australia 2 (Leandro Jesus 2)

Replay: School Sport Australia Under-12 nationals - SA v WA (Boys)

South Australia overcame a two-goal deficit to overpower Western Australia 4-2 in a thrilling encounter to round out the second day of the School Sport Australia Under-12 Football Championships in Rockingham.

The visitors trailed 2-0 after 13 minutes thanks to a magical five-minute period by WA’s Leandro Jesus.

His first strike opened WA’s account in the eighth minute, then he headed home another to put the locals on track for their first win of the competition.

Coming off a 2-1 defeat to Victoria Blue, SA took a while to find their feet and spent the majority of the opening half in defence.

South Australia proved too good for the hosts
South Australia proved too good for the hosts

However, they struck back against the run of play when Ollie Budin found himself perfectly positioned in the box to finish Riad Rarhidi’s fast break down the right wing.

And when Rarhidi beat the keeper from an almost impossible angle, the boys in red found themselves on level terms just three minutes into the second half.

If not for an offside ruling, WA would have regained the lead, but it was all South Australia in the closing stages.

In the first of two late goals, Joshua Tassotti beat his man then looped the ball over the keeper’s head to put South Australia in front for the first time at 3-2.

Then in the final minute of play, the busy No.9 beat WA’s backline and then an advancing keeper to ram home the advantage to score SA’s fourth of the match.

The unlikely victory is SA’s second from three outings, while the loss leaves WA still searching for its first win after two matches.

Girls - Western Australia 7 (Savanna Glavovic 3, Ella Lange 2, Mia Boudames, Milla Butler) defeated South Australia 0

Replay: School Sport Australia Under-12 nationals - SA v WA (Girls)

In a scoreline that reflected the homeside’s dominance, Western Australia maintained its unbeaten record with a 7-0 win over South Australia.

For South Australia, it was their second outing of the day after an earlier draw with Victoria Blue. The extra work seemed to take the edge off the girls in red, and they lacked the spark that saw them net three goals on the opening day.

Mia Boudames was a powerhouse in attack for the home side, and after coming close to scoring in the eighth minute, she then stood up the goalkeeper six minute later to bang home WA’s first.

Western Australia put seven past South Australia.
Western Australia put seven past South Australia.

The 1-0 halftime score flattered the visitors who for the most part were forced into protecting their own goal.

Ruby Autio and Isabella Lionello initiated SA’s go forward after the break, and with 10 minutes left to play they only trailed by one goal.

But when Ella Lange’s thunderous strike doubled WA’s tally, it opened the gates to an astonishing feeding frenzy.

The John Curtin College of Arts student quickly bagged her second before Savanna Glavovic slotted home an amazing three goals in the space of four minutes. And during that period, Milla Butler still found time to kick one of her own.

Boys - Queensland 1 (Taj Pryde) defeated ACT 0

Replay: School Sport Australia Under-12 nationals - Queensland v ACT (Boys)

Queensland made it two wins from two starts with a 1-0 victory over a gallant ACT at Lark Hill Sportsplex in Rockingham.

Just as they did in Monday’s victory over NSW, Queensland dominated from the outset and looked to have scored in the opening minute, only for Zachary Harrison’s strike to thunder into the timberwork.

Queensland had the better of a scoreless first half and were best served by Jett Ford upfront and busy midfielder Kazuki Uranishi.

Bruno Jirgensons was one of the ACT’s best, and if not for the keeper’s agility, his well timed header from a corner kick may well have opened his side’s account.

In the end, the result was decided following a chaotic three minutes of action 12 minutes after the interval.

First up, Queensland’s Savva Lucas found himself one-on-one with the ACT keeper only for his shot to roll wide of the target. That was quickly followed by an ACT free kick - a long range thunderbolt that was intercepted just shy of the target.

From there, Queensland hurried out of trouble and scored the game’s only goal off the head of the diminutive Taj Pryde, who found space in a crowded box to knock-in Nathaniel Alberto’s perfectly delivered corner kick.

In a blow for the ACT, they still remain winless after three starts.

Girls - Queensland 2 (Akira Booth, Charlotte Ainsworth) defeated ACT 0

Replay: School Sport Australia Under-12 nationals - Queensland v ACT (Girls)

Queensland claimed their first victory on the back of two late goals to sink the ACT 2-0 in the opening game of the competition’s second day.

Both sides entered the contest coming off defeats on an opening day where neither found the back of the net.

And that’s how it remained for 47 minutes before Surfers Paradise State School student Akira Booth broke the drought.

When it rains it pours, and Charlotte Ainsworth struck again just seconds before the final whistle to round out the ACT’s third straight defeat.

ACT looked dangerous early, particularly when the long striding Grace York found space down the left wing. But as was to be the case all match, the Queenslander’s scrambled to shut down any real serious threat.

Queensland finished the opening half with the better of play and almost scored through Maddy Primrose.

Booth and Payton Rose constantly threatened after halftime, but it looked like Queensland would once again finish scoreless - but then the floodgates opened.

DAY ONE REPLAYS AND REPORTS

Girls - NSW 1 (Erin Dunne) defeated Queensland 0

Replay: School Sport Australia Under-12 nationals - NSW v Queensland (Girls)

Reigning champions Queensland have been dealt a blow following a 1-0 loss to NSW in their opening round fixture of the School Sport Under-12 Football Championships.

Following their 3-0 victory over Victoria Blue in the morning game, the win leaves NSW perfectly placed for a shot at the title.

An eighth minute cross by Isabel Savige almost saw Queensland hit the front, but they were denied as Matilda Simpson’s strike sailed agonisingly wide of the right post.

NSW threatened on several occasions, but their best period of play came in the 18th minute.

NSW girls enjoyed an excellent start to their title chase.

Two powerful shots on goal were saved by Queensland’s keeper before Madena Moussa’s fancy footwork brought the desired result.

In a one-on-one contest, the Oatley West Public student turned her opponent inside out only to see her strike saved before the elusive Erin Dunne slotted home the rebound for a 1-0 lead.

If not for a full stretch save by the NSW keeper, Queensland would have drawn level from a long range free kick two minutes before the change of ends.

NSW headed to the break with a crucial one-goal advantage, and the score would remain that way after the sides slugged a goalless second half.

Boys - Queensland 2 (Savva Lucas, Nathaniel Alberto) defeated NSW 1 (Noah Harb)

Replay: School Sport Australia Under-12 nationals - NSW v Queensland (Boys)

Queensland have put a dent in NSW’s championship hopes with a 2-1 victory on the opening day of the Under-12 Football Championships.

After falling to Victoria Blue earlier in the day, NSW started on the back foot as a tall Queensland outfit imposed themselves from the opening whistle.

Savva Lucas struck first. After finding the back field, the Kelvin Grove State College student eased the ball into the goal in just the second minute of play.

And they led 2-0 after 10 minutes when Nathaniel Alberto put another past the under siege NSW keeper.

Blues skipper Domenic Onley worked overtime to keep his side’s head above water, and Max Smith almost rewarded his efforts with a narrow miss five minutes before halftime.

There wasn't much between NSW and Queensland boys sides.

Jett Ford and Alberto almost put the result beyond doubt just before the interval, but at 2-0 it was all Queensland.

The second stanza was barely two minutes old before Noah Harb promptly put NSW back in the contest.

Positioned on the edge of the box, his strike from the left post was the goal needed to lift NSW spirits.

But it would be their last, as limited opportunities were traded in the closing 20 minutes before Queensland headed to the sheds with a perfect opening day record.

Girls - NSW 3 (Madena Moussa, Erin Dunne, Willa Pearson) defeated Victoria Blue 0

Replay: School Sport Australia Under-12 nationals - NSW v Victoria #1 (Girls)

NSW announced themselves in Rockingham with a comprehensive 3-0 takedown of Victoria Blue in the opening clash of the girls competition.

Both sides came out full of running from the get-the-go as they looked to assert their authority in front of goal.

The NSW girls looked the most likely to finish several early raids, but it would be 14 minutes before they found the back of the net.

A clinical midfield build up finished at the feet of Madena Moussa, and the vice-captain beat the keeper from the top of the box to give NSW a decisive one goal advantage.

Victoria had their chances before halftime, a fast break put Madeline Hawker in open space before a Layla Habib free kick sailed over the crossbar.

Leading 1-0 at the break, NSW went on with the job adding a further two goals in the closing stages.

Erin Dunne finished off a fast break with 12 minutes to play before Seaforth Public School’s Willa Pearson cemented the Blues victory in the final minute.

Boys - Victoria Blue 1 (Jordan Vonja) defeated NSW 0

Replay: School Sport Australia Under-12 nationals - NSW v Victoria #1 (Boys)

Victoria Blue has shown their title credentials by holding on to defeat NSW 1-0 in the opening match of the School Sport Australia Under-12 Football Championships.

Back for the first time since 2019, both sides looked to be making up for lost time in a frenetic opening that had both goalkeepers on red alert.

Austin Craig found space for NSW down the left hand side and created two chances inside the first three minutes. His first strike found the keeper before a deft cross into the square was pushed wide of the right post.

Victoria almost struck in the fourth minute from long range. With the breeze at their back, the well-timed strike thudded into the gloves of the Blues keeper.

Victoria started their title chase well.
Victoria started their title chase well.

Both sides then found their rhythm, and with quality ball control looked to attack the goals.

Ari Phillips proved a constant threat for Victoria, but it was Jordan Vonja who would find the back of the net in the 18th minute.

After a horrible mix up in front of goal, Vonja simply tapped in with his right foot to initiate wild celebrations.

NSW almost drew level two minutes after the break. A clearing kick from the keeper catching the breeze and the Victorian goalie out of position. If not for a fortuitous bounce off the right post the scores would have been levelled.

An audacious scissor kick almost doubled the margin in the 44th minute and Victoria could have had another if not for the outstanding agility of the NSW keeper.

NSW pressed forward in the final minutes but their best chance to score sailed wide.
