BAD LOOK: GILLY ERUPTS AT UMPIRING EFFORT

From throwing bats at opposition players to f-bombs and sideline sledges, recap some of the most heated moments in BBL history.

‘F*** YOU MARLON’

It started with a sneaky move and ended in a bat being thrown.

Welcome to the heavyweight feud between Shane Warne and Marlon Samuels.

Flashback to 2013 and the two stars were going head-to-head in the Melbourne derby when Samuels put his arms around David Hussey to prevent him from going for a second run.

Hussey complained to the umpire but it wasn’t until later that things exploded.

After bowling a dot ball to Samuels, Warne let the West Indian all-rounder have it.

“C’mon Marlon,” he screamed.

“You’re going to run around and grab some people. You want to grab some people. You want to grab some more people. F*** you Marlon.”

At that moment Warne’s on-field microphone was turned off but the fireworks were only just beginning.

The two continued to trade sledges, with Warne grabbing Samuels by the shirt and pointing in his face.

After initially being separated and play continuing, the two had one more battle left.

Later in the innings Warne fielded a ball to prevent a quick single before flicking his underarm return at Samuels.

Although it was soft, the Renegade wasn’t about to stand for it and returned fire by throwing his bat at Warne.

What a derby!

MCKAY, CHRISTIAN GO FACE TO GRILL

If you’re going to take a quick single, don’t get in Clint McKay’s way.

That was the message back in BBL03, when the fiery Melbourne Stars bowler unloaded on Heat all-rounder Dan Christian.

While bowling at the death, McKay accused Christian of blocking him from getting a clean run at the ball as he tried to pull off a runout.

Within seconds the two were face-to-face (or face to grill), trading words before the umpire stepped in.

Legendary Australian cricketer Allan Border backed Christian’s tactics.

“Clint McKay is moaning about that but if I was the batsman, there is no way I’m running out of the road of him,” he said on commentary.

“I wouldn’t be having a crack at Dan Christian. He knows how to handle himself. It got very fiery. Nose to nose. I can’t lip read there but it was fiery.”

‘HE RACED A COUPLE PAST HIS MELON’

They may not be the biggest names, but that didn’t stop Hobart batsman Michael Hill and Adelaide bowler Greg West trading insults back in BBL05.

The drama started when West, who was on debut, produced a ripping short ball to Hill, which knocked the batsman clean off his feet and led to the two exchanging words in the middle of the pitch.

The very next ball West ensured he would come out of the exchange a winner when he claimed Hill’s wicket, sending him back to the pavilion for 32.

Asked by sideline reporter Mel Jones if he enjoyed the ‘banter’ in the middle, Hill let loose.

“Banter? Who with?

“West? That left-armer? Nah, nah, nah. He had a little bit to say. He probably hasn’t really bowled that well. He’s got me but he hasn’t really bowled so well, so we’ll see how he goes when he has to come out and face some of our quicks.”

Whack!

The war of words didn’t end there though, with Channel 10 then crossing down to veteran Striker Brad Hodge to get his take on Hill’s comments.

“He said he didn’t bowl that well!,” a bemused Hodge said.

“I thought he raced a couple past his melon. That’s what I saw. I haven’t seen him around this comp for a while. Big words, I would have thought. It was a pretty strong statement.”

FINALLY, GAYLE DOES SOMETHING FOR THE THUNDER

Brad Haddin has never been afraid to speak his mind. Just ask Chris Gayle, who copped an almighty spray from the Sydney Sixers’ veteran back in BBL02.

Going into the match, Gayle had experienced somewhat of a disappointing season, failing to fire with the bat despite his big price tag and huge reputation.

Haddin and Gayle were trading words on the field throughout the Sixers’ innings, and it was Gayle who had the last laugh, removing the wicketkeeper after he miscued a slog.

As he walked off, Haddin offered his bat to Gayle as more words were exchanged.

Asked about what had taken place in the middle, Haddin teed off.

“I just think it was important Chris Gayle started to do something for the Thunder fans,” he said.

“He has been all talk so far this tournament and they haven’t won a game.

“At least the Thunder fans have seen Chris Gayle do something for his money, hey.”

BOOF: NO MORE EXCUSES FROM KP

When it comes to Kevin Pietersen, one thing is for sure. You either love him or hate him.

And you can guess which side of the fence former Australian coach Darren Lehmann was on after he fired off a tweet calling for KP’s axing following the Stars’ exit from BBL06.

“Time for Stars to move KP on, spent (too) much money on him and didn’t win. Don’t want to listen to his excuses anymore,” Lehmann wrote.

It would be fair to say the Stars were furious, with heavy hitter president Eddie McGuire, captain David Hussey and Pietersen himself responding to the criticism.

“What a bummer that one is,” Pietersen said. “I can only do my best for the Stars and I think I’ve done pretty well.

“First year I shared player of the year, second year I was player of the year, this year I have top-scored.”

Lehmann later deleted his tweet.

HOW’S THE NERVE ON BRAD HADDIN?

Ben Laughlin couldn’t believe his bad luck back in BBL05.

Bowling at the death against the Sydney Sixers, the Adelaide quick had Brad Haddin out cold when he edged a ball behind.

However, in one of the worst umpiring blunders of the season, somehow it was called a wide.

Despite the fact he was clearly out, it didn’t stop Haddin from getting into a fiery exchange with Laughlin.

Expert commentator Andrew Flintoff was loving the nerve of Haddin, who refused to take a backwards step despite clearly getting lucky.

“All I can say is well played Brad Haddin. He had the cheek to have a go at the bowler,” he said while laughing away.

The Strikers were a little less impressed.
