SuperCoach BBL prices revealed: Bowlers

PICKING bowlers in SuperCoach BBL is fraught with trauma — if you get it wrong, you’ll cop it when it comes to your final score, with each run conceded worth it’s weight in gold.

Ideally you want a player who is going to bowl a minimum of two overs and not be whacked all over the park — the better the economy rate of those bowlers who do roll their arm over for more than 12 balls, the greater the bonus potential, with a whopping 25 points up for grabs for a bowler who can concede less than four runs per over.

It’s no surprise the scores that would have been achieved in last year’s SuperCoach BBL were significantly lower for bowlers, with only two of the top 10 priced players for BBL|08 being solely bowlers.

It’s therefore immediately tough to pick which bowlers will be key acquisitions for your SuperCoach BBL side in 2018/19 — so go in with an open mind and have faith in your selections!

1. Andrew Tye (Perth Scorchers) - $246,800

By far the highest-rated bowler in the SuperCoach BBL ranks, Tye has been a regular member of the Scorchers’ side since switching allegiances from Sydney Thunder ahead of BBL|04. Only competing in six games last season, he nevertheless claimed a strong 16 wickets, with 50 dot balls and an economy rate just over eight runs per over. He’s a clear strike weapon who will concede runs, but will claim wickets as well.

2. Rashid Khan (Adelaide Strikers) - $198,800

The absolute find of the tournament in BBL|07, the query around Rashid is whether other teams have done their due diligence on the Afghani wonder spinner. He finished the season as the equal-leading wicket-taker with 18 wickets at 13.83, boasting an economy of just 5.64 — the best of any player to bowl more than four overs. He finished inside the top five of the BBL’s Player of the Tournament award, and was voted by his peers as the Adelaide Strikers’ MVP.

3. James Pattinson (Brisbane Heat) - $62,500

Coming in at heavily-discounted price for SuperCoach BBL|08, persistent back issues have hampered the right-arm quick, who has suffered no less than five back stress fractures over the past few years. The express seamer’s talent is unquestionable, but question marks remain over whether his body can hold up to the rigours of bowling 150km/h. The Heat seems to think so, as ‘Patto’ headlines Brisbane’s BBL|08 signings, having signed on for two years. He’s been bowling well according to reports and is yet to experience any setbacks. If he’s named for the Heat, he’s a must.

4. Cameron Green (Perth Scorchers) - $42,500

Considered a bowler in SuperCoach BBL but really more of an all-rounder who can bowl in excess of 140km/h and bat in the top six, Cameron Green is at a juicy price as he gets ready to embark on his debut season in the BBL. The problem? Well, it comes down to selection. Nathan Coulter-Nile, Jhye Richardson, Joel Paris, Jason Behrendorff and Tye are all fit and firing, with David Willey also going around again. But, if he is given an early debut, lock him in.

5. Adam Zampa (Melbourne Stars) - $122,200

Adam Zampa is now a regular for Australia in short form cricket.

Zampa’s JLT form has been strong, and on those figures alone, it’s enough for him to make the team of that tournament. But is he a good SuperCoach pick? Zampa played just the five games last year for a lean SuperCoach average of 21 SuperCoach points. But we’re expecting the 26-year-old to have more opportunities with the ball in BBL|08. A favourite of SuperCoach scouts throughout the JLT Cup, load him and watch him rip this summer.

6. Nathan Lyon (Sydney Sixers) - $195,600

Nathan Lyon only took to the field four times for the Sixers in BBL|07, and it’s hard to imagine he’ll suit up many more times in BBL|08, with international duties set to see him busy for most of the summer. He’s a watch-and-see and perhaps an upgrade option as the season comes to an end in late January following the conclusion of Australia’s Test obligations. If he’s selected for the Sixers, you gotta get the GOAT!

7. Fawad Ahmed (Sydney Thunder) - $152,700

Despite his domestic allegiances lying to Victoria, Fawad Ahmed was a consistent performer for the Thunder in BBL|07 — he not only suited up for all 10 home-and-away games, but claimed 12 wickets at an economy rate of just over six runs per over, and a fantastic 94 dot balls. Having previously toiled for the Renegades at the now Marvel Stadium, he’s the sort of player who could make Spotless Stadium his own, and rip through teams his right-arm leg-breaks. He’s not a demonstrative spinner, but he is a good one.

8. Kane Richardson (Melbourne Renegades) - $147,800

He might not be a unique selection, such is the consistency of his performances with the white ball, but that’s exactly why Richardson may prove a SuperCoach BBL favourite — someone you can set-and-forget. Looking at his numbers from a SuperCoach perspective for BBL|07, 96 dot balls is very respectable, as is his 12 wickets. Going at just over eight runs per over is far from ideal, but handily he can hit — he had two appearances at the crease in 2017/18 and finished not out in both with a strike rate of 131.25.

9. Peter Siddle (Adelaide Strikers) - $147,700

The biggest danger to the wily veteran being a solid SuperCoach BBL selection is whether he holds his place in the Australian Test side. A model of consistency, Siddle took his undoubted talents to the Adelaide Strikers last season, and immediately became part of a championship-winning team, culminating in a devastating spell of 3/17 in the BBL final against Hobart. Siddle’s economy rate of 5.94 is super impressive, and the best of any quick to bowl more than four overs in BBL|07. He also sent down two maidens for the tournament — a rare feat in the modern game.

10. Daniel Worrall (Melbourne Stars) - $72,000

In BBL|07, Dan Worrall played five matches for the Stars, taking two wickets with best figures of 2/25. His ability to take the new ball away from right-handers makes him a challenging proposition for top order batsmen. He also produced one smashing innings last season, hitting 13 not out off a mere eight balls, blasting two fours in the process. If he can maintain his fitness levels, he’s a very valuable cheaper bowling option in SuperCoach BBL, particularly with former new ball rival John Hastings having headed to new pastures ahead of this coming season.
