GAME 9: COLLINGWOOD vs CARLTON

SuperCoaches, please welcome the latest headache to your SuperCoach thinking in Jack Crisp (DEF | $519,900). 33 disposals of which 27 were uncontested as well as a game high 12 marks for 99 SuperCoach points - Crisp found space easily and was often the chief architect in Collingwood’s rebound from the defensive 50. Crisp has played every single game since crossing from the Lions, has featured in the top five of Collingwood’s best at fairest since his arrival, and sits in just 3.5 per cent of SuperCoach teams making him a great point of difference.

For those who were contemplating Darcy Moore (DEF/FWD | $239,400), you’ll be pleased with what the returning Magpie dished up today. He patrolled Collingwood’s defence, dominating the arial contests and was equally astute at ground level. He took eight of Collingwood’s kick-outs, and finished with 17 disposals with 10 of those intercept possessions. His score of 97 SuperCoach points will have him locked and loaded for many, and with dual position status, he’ll slot into many forward or backlines ahead of Round 1. Although his ownership only sits at 12.6 per cent at time of writing.

Adam Treloar (MID | $594,200) reminded us why he is certainly a midfield premium option. A lazy 42 disposals at an elite 73 per cent disposal efficiency for 128 SuperCoach points will have plenty interested. Treloar stunningly enough sits in just three per cent of SuperCoach teams, also making him a unique midfield selection. His midfield mates Dayne Beams (MID | $557,600), Scott Pendlebury (MID | $562,000) and Steele Sidebottom (MID | $551,700) look like solid options too, after scoring 95, 114 and 115 respectively but in doing so, never really got out of second gear.

For the Blues, Patrick Cripps (MID | $648,200) and Kade Simpson (DEF | $570,300 defender) were the only two players for Carlton who cracked triple digits, scoring 106 and 105 respectively. Both were somewhat reserved in their approach today, which gives SuperCoaches a lot to work with given the scope of points accumulation the pair are more than capable of. Cripps sits currently in a whopping 53.5 per cent of teams, while Simpson accounts for just 6.2 per cent.

SuperCoaches would’ve been happy to see No.1 draft pick Sam Walsh (MID | $207,300) back up his JLT1 game with a score of 96 SuperCoach points against the Pies. He is currently only second to Patrick Dangerfield as the most owned player in SuperCoach. How he is not in 100% of teams come Round 1 will be a mystery. The kid is good, start him on field with confidence. Sitting third in the ownership stakes is teammate Will Setterfield (MID/FWD | $144,900) who scored a par of 60 SuperCoach points today. It brings his preseason average to 86.5 points and that’s enough for us to start him.

The news isn’t so good for the likes of Nic Newman (DEF | $394,100) and Michael Gibbons (MID | $102,400) were quiet and will find themselves dropped from SuperCoach teams heading into Round 1. Newman managed just 46 SuperCoach points meanwhile Gibbons was Carlton’s lowest SuperCoach scorer with just 34 points.

GAME 8: FREMANTLE DOCKERS vs WEST COAST EAGLES

Like the Showdowns, it doesn’t matter for a Derby whether it’s in the regular season or the preseason - these games mean something. Beginning with a handshake, this match-up was played in high spirits and lacked the violence of previous encounters between the teams, instead beginning with a ceremonial handshake.

Will this sure-to-be iconic snap be dubbed ‘The Shake’ in years to come?
Will this sure-to-be iconic snap be dubbed ‘The Shake’ in years to come?

That meeting of Eagle Andrew Gaff (MID | $587,400) and Andrew Brayshaw (MID | $328,600) from the Dockers was hyped up, but so too is the latter’s second year form - in his two encounters this JLT Series, he’s looked the goods, accumulating 54 points to half-time and finishing the game with 83 points. If Jack Darling (FWD | $471,700) , with 96 points, had kicked straight then he might’ve topped Sheed - 1 goal 4 isn’t a great scoreboard return but his workrate and ability to influence play was outstanding, with a more accurate Willie Rioli (FWD | $318,700) amassing 147 - pretty good when you consider he only appeared on field for 75% of the time.

Similarly, the Eagles’ grand final hero Dom Sheed (MID | $394,100) has not missed a beat this preseason - he has looked completely comfortable as a prime mover through the midfield, and strikes as a serious point of difference at that price point. He might be on the verge of a serious breakout season, hitting 134 tonight.

Shannon Hurn (DEF | $523,400) looks set to have a big SuperCoach season and will be a big beneficiary of the new play on / kick-in rule, which will help him earn some cheap points, finishing with 89. Adding some grit to the Dockers was Reece Conca (MID | $392,900), whose return of an even century - the only Freo player to hit the mark - was achieved in just 61% game time. It was good to see Jesse Hogan (FWD | $498,300) bounce back from a quiet one last week, amassing 91 points - he’s a natural accumulator of decent scores, and a decent Draft option.

GAME 7: ST. KILDA vs WESTERN BULLDOGS

In distressing sights for anyone who is a fan of our beloved code of football, Paddy McCartin (FWD | $262,200) finished the match on the bench following a head knock that will see him, once again, assessed for concussion symptoms. Fingers crossed the big-bodied leading forward recovers in time to assume his place in the square for St. Kilda in Round 1, as he looked good before suffering his latest knock.

Hopeful to line up for the Saints in Round 1 is Dylan Roberton (DEF | $297,500). Just under 12 months ago, the St. Kilda defender collapsed behind play against Geelong at GMHBA Stadium, and missed the remainder of the season, and has since had a heart monitor inserted into his chest. Against the Bulldogs, Roberton found the ball with ease collecting 24 disposals at 88 efficiency and claiming seven marks. He’s a bargain buy at that price, but it’s worth monitoring his health, as he reported feeling ‘wonky’ in the rooms after the game. Not good.

Ready to resume from his second Anterior Cruciate Ligament knee operation, Bulldog Tom Liberatore (MID | $300,400) appears primed for a big season as a mid-price bargain, accumulating 21 disposals as part of his seven clearances and four inside 50s. Elsewhere, in the engine room for the Saints, Jack Steele (MID | $512,600) had 25 disposals and 10 tackles, while Luke Dunstan (MID | $437,000) also found enough of it, finishing with 21 disposals and 10 tackles.

In the absence of Dan Hannebery (MID | $326,100), who seems certain to miss the opening round of the season as he battles a hamstring strain, Jake Billings (FWD | $437,600) continues to showcase his wares further up the ground, while Jade Gresham (FWD | $429,600) attended 13 centre bounces and both loom as forward options who will primarily move through the midfield. Josh Dunkley (FWD / MID | $516,300) was back in the guts for the Dogs this round of the JLT Series.

GAME 6: SYDNEY SWANS vs GOLD COAST SUNS

More than anything, the news to come out of the match-up in Lismore was, unfortunately, injuries to key players who are very relevant to SuperCoach players in 2019.

Aliir Aliir of the Swans surprised as a ruckman in the preseason hit-out against the Suns
Aliir Aliir of the Swans surprised as a ruckman in the preseason hit-out against the Suns

On the Swans side of the equation, both Callum Sinclair (RUC | $528,000) and premium defender Jake Lloyd (DEF | $608,200) were late withdrawals from the side, while for the Suns key defender Rory Thompson (DEF | $265,400) will miss the entirety of the 2019 season having ruptured his Anterior Cruciate Ligament at training during the week. In the absence of the former, Aliir Aliir (DEF | $431,800) took the majority of the ruck work and acquitted himself admirably against the giant Suns co-captain Jarrad Witts (RUC | $480,900), picking up 94 points compared to Witts’ 86.

Isaac Heeney (FWD / MID | $529,200) finished the game on the pine with 70 points to his name, which is not what you want to see from one of the likely prime Dual Position Players in a very small collection of available multi-prong positional options in 2019. He rolled his ankle in the first term and managed to play out the game until three-quarter time, but it would be reasonable to expect that he’ll be fine for Round 1. Touk Miller (MID | $482,400) had the ball on a string for the Suns, ending up with 125 points.

The news was less positive for the Suns’ high draft pick Izak Rankine (FWD | $198,300), who appeared to injure his hamstring, and Aaron Young (FWD | $325,700), who injured his ankle. Swans’ big-bodied mids Luke Parker ($561,700) and Josh Kennedy ($525,600) had an easy run of it for 128 and 106 points respectively, despite Witts being the standout performer for the Suns - at times it looked like he was picking out the Swans’ fleet of on-the-ball players as opposed to feeding his own men.

Presumed Gold Coast bargain buy Anthony Miles (MID | $342,200) failed to get going, with the former Tiger registering just 35 points. On the field for 77% of the time, that’s simply not enough. Moving back into defence following a regular stint around the ball in JLT1, the Swans’ Callum Mills (DEF | $428,900) was nevertheless busy, picking up 22 disposals to go along with eight marks on his was to 93 points.

GAME 5: HAWTHORN vs RICHMOND

The Tigers brought 12 players back into their side that sat out of JLT1, and in doing so turned around a 40-point deficit at half time into an eight-point win.

Trent Cotchin (MID | $486,900) was outstanding for the Tigers, as he marshalled his troops to a memorable (can we say that about JLT?) win. His 24 disposals, six clearances and seven inside 50s to go with a long-range goal on the run from the centre bounce will bode well for SuperCoaches looking for a handy point of difference.

Breakout contender Jack Higgins (FWD | $392,700) looked classy, spending his time in the midfield with stints up forward. He collected 19 disposals, seven marks and three goals in a handy display.

On the rookie front, Noah Balta (FWD | $123,900) showed why the life of a rookie key position player is fraught with danger in SuperCoach. A SuperCoach century one week, and just nine disposals the next. While he could be in Round 1 calculations, you’d be brave to select him given the difference in output in as many weeks.

While the Hawks were ultimately disappointing, it was Jaeger O'Meara (MID | $503,200) who shinned the brightest. His 35 disposals at 71 per cent efficiency and a goal have him firmly set for a big a year in Tom Mitchell’s absence. Breakout contender (James Worpel FWD/MID | $395,700) was solid with 24 disposals and going at 75 per cent efficiency.

All eyes were on James Cousins (MID | $219,900) after last week’s triple-digit effort. He had a strong first half but as the Tigers repelled in the third and fourth quarters, Cousins went a bit quiet. He finished his night with 21 disposals at 71 per cent efficiency, but it was his game high eight clangers that’ll make SuperCoaches rethink. New Hawk Jack Scrimshaw (DEF | $149,800) looked comfortable once again. His elite disposal efficiency rated at 78 per cent, which went well along his 18 touches.

GAME 4: MELBOURNE vs BRISBANE

Max Gawn (RUC | $692,100) just reminded us all why we would be fools to overlook him ahead of Round 1 in SuperCoach. A lazy score of 119 for the Melbourne monster has put him firmly in the gun for a Round 1 position, particularly in light of Brayden Preuss’ demotion to the VFL while he continues to develop. Joining the party for the Dees was Angus Brayshaw (MID | $526,900) who helped himself to 126 points and gun onballer Clayton Oliver (MID | $622,600) who finished with 101 SuperCoach points.

The big news for SuperCoaches looking to get on a cash cow, is that Aaron vandenBerg FWD/MID | $283,400) had a solid showing through the midfield with stints up forward, finishing with 97 points. Similarly, if you’re looking for a point of difference, Christian Petracca (FWD/MID | $442,600) looked good with 90 points. SuperCoach cash cow Marty Hore (DEF | $117,300) had another decent hit out, and finished with 69 points.

For the Lions, it was Jarryd Lyons (MID | $502,000) who made the biggest impression with a massive 147 SuperCoach points. He’s more of a Draft option at this stage, but certainly is somebody to keep a close watch on. Popular midfield option Lachie Neale (MID | $607,300) had 101 points while ruck option Stefan Martin (RUC | $573,300) rounded out the night with 92 points. Alex Witherden (DEF | $455,000) has had strong ownership, however his score of 79 has his SuperCoache owners concerned.

GAME 3: PORT ADELAIDE vs NORTH MELBOURNE

Put Tom Rockliff’s (MID | $405,900) name on your radar. After 42 disposals, 16 marks and two goals, the former SuperCoach gun looks to have wound back the clock after a ridiculous 170-point score against North Melbourne. The Power gave us plenty to consider in SuperCoach ahead of Round 1.

Scott Lycett (RUC/FWD | $441,200) was instrumental with 122 SuperCoach points. Similarly, gun dual position option Robbie Gray FWD/MID | $525,500) had 92 points while former captain Travis Boak (FWD | $478,000) has put his hand up as a unique forward option with 101 points. Justin Westhoff (RUC/FWD | $549,500) had a strong outing as well, finishing with 98 points.

However, after a solid outing in JLT1, draftees Willem Drew (FWD/MID | $123,900) backed up with 86 points, as did Zak Butters (MID | $157,800) who also finished on 82 points as well as Zavier Duursma (DEF/MID | $130,800) who managed 78 points with all three firming on a Round 1 debut. The news wasn’t great for No.5 pick Connor Rozee (DEF/FWD | $189,300) who only managed 44 points in the high-scoring affair.

For the Roos, their highest scorer was former Port midfielder Jared Polec (MID | $513,500) who finished on 92. Paul Ahern (MID | $375,100) continues to get SuperCoaches thinking, with two solid scores now putting him firmly in the breakout contender bracket. His score of 90 against the Power has him a good option in Draft formats. Meanwhile, father/son draftee Bailey Scott (MID | $117,300) has put his hand up for a Round 1 debut, after scoring 89 points.

GAME 2: GWS GIANTS vs ADELAIDE CROWS

In a typical low-scoring scrapfest in the nation’s capital, a real lack of urgency from the Giants marked the game as a pure preseason game - once they had kicked themselves out of competing with the Crows, both teams mostly focused on setting up their structures and cementing methods of attack towards goal.

Once again it appears that teams with big-bodied midfields are going to be able to take advantage of the 6-6-6 format, with space for their forwards to lead into once the centre contest is won. The Crows finally sported their fab fearsome foursome - the brothers Crouch (Matt | MID | $551,300 and Brad | MID | $418,000), Bryce Gibbs (MID | $523,900), and Rory Sloane (MID | $524,300) picking up 158, 124, 88, and 115 points respectively. The Giants, who will be missing the injured Callum Ward (MID | $568,000) for the next six or so weeks, were very reliant upon the incredible ball-winning ability of Steve Coniglio (MID | $588,600) with 123 points.

Less impressive in their second 2019 hit-out were GWS youngsters Jye Caldwell (MID | $162,300) and Jackson Hately (MID | $148,800), who only managed 24 and 42 points. Tim Taranto (MID | $481,600) was once again very solid with 96, and with just 6% ownership looms as a vital point of difference for a mid-priced player who seems likely to leap to premium status. Rebounding from half-back, Wayne Milera (DEF | $433,100) was beyond impressive, with 29 disposals at a mind-boggling 100% efficiency and 123 points. Brodie Smith (DEF | $332,500) is a set-and-forget lock in the backline, earning 97 points.

While Shane Mumford (RUC | $320,200) will miss the first couple of rounds after internal club suspension following his white line fever some years ago surfaced over the off-season, Dawson Simpson (RUC | $473,500) won plenty of hit-outs but was barely involved in the play, earning 36 points. Sam Jacobs (RUC | $455,700) with 106 looks extremely fit and ready to go, offering a solid option for a consistent 100 point plus earning solo ruckman, perhaps only just shy of being a ‘premium’ selection. Toby Greene (FWD | $354,600) offers some value as a ‘fallen premium’, but in his first hit out in 2019 was only just going, picking up a mere 39 points.

GAME 1: GEELONG CATS vs ESSENDON BOMBERS

Having lost to last year’s cellar dweller Carlton in the opening round of the JLT Community Series last week, the Bombers went in with a strong line-up against the Cats down in Sleepy Hollow and...were they awake? Something wasn’t quite right, with their defensive transition a concern and their small midfield cohort exposed by the bigger Geelong bodies.

Missing Cale Hooker (DEF | $421,500), intercept defender Aaron Francis (DEF | $350,900) was forced into a more accountable role, and were exposed - as a player who was expected to be a decent mid-priced defensive option, his requirement to ‘play tall’ against the Cats wasn’t encouraging from a SuperCoach owner’s perspective.

No one from Essendon cracked the ton. None of Essendon’s smaller midfield brigade were able to enhance their SuperCoach stocks - Zach Merrett (MID | $544,800), Dylan Shiel (MID | $487,000), and Dyson Heppell (MID | $551,500) were outpointed around the stoppages for the most part, while valuable Dual Position Player options Andrew McGrath (DEF / MID | $384,300), Darcy Parish (FWD / MID | $436,100), and Dylan Smith (FWD / MID | $531,300) were, for the most part, not involved in the play anywhere near enough to warrant ownership.

By comparison, the Cats had their traditional players earning a heap of the ball and a heap of points beside - playing a more outside role, Joel Selwood (MID | $570,500) looked very comfortable in space and absolutely monstered the Bombers for 153 points; how is he in so few teams? The high-priced Patrick Dangerfield (FWD / MID | $660,500) should simply be in every SuperCoach side when it comes to the crunch in Round 1 - there’s no real DPP that offers his high-scoring capability in the game, attending 21 centre bounces and pocketing a lazy 128 points. Tim Kelly (FWD / MID | $505,800) was in there 15 times, and seems certain to be a regular 100+ point players in key first rotation midfield roles in 2019, with 110 points to his name. Luke Dahlhaus (FWD / MID | $418,300) picked up a lazy 118, and is definitely a Draft option.

Jordan Clark (DEF | $144,300) with 67 points again had a regular role as a half-back and will likely be a lock for that spot in the Cats’ Round 1 side, as will Tom Atkins (MID | $112,900). At that price they present as tantalising options for anyone looking for rookies with seeming relative job security. Less certainty surrounds cheap ruck options Darcy Fort ($117,300) and Zac Clarke ($142,600), with the former not offering a whole lot and the latter not playing this round, with Joe Daniher (FWD | $277,800) - who will presumably be better for the run - preferred as a support partner for Tom Bellchambers (RUC | $505,700) this week.
